How Has Star Trek Impacted You?

March 29 2014
So earlier this morning, I had to do a 10 min presentation for my Sociology 101 class on how Star Trek impacted society. ^^; My question to you all, is...

How has Star Trek impacted you?

*hugs*
Here was the transcript of some points of my presentation ^^; (Part 1)

Address to Social Change
Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966, around the time of the civil rights movements. Through Star Trek, Gene wanted to address the issues of racism and sexism, featuring minority groups as equals on television. The Enterprise had a very diverse multi-cultural crew that represented many minority groups. This diversity helped strengthened the crew’s efficiency when working together.

Role of Women
Gene wanted to change how television portrayed women by giving them equally important roles on Star Trek. Majel Barrett played as “Number One”, the second in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise during the pilot episode. Nichelle Nicholes played as Lt. Uhura, chief officer of communications. And later down the road, we have Kate Mulgrew who played the pivotal role of Captain Janeway on the starship U.S.S. Voyager.

Role of African-Americans
Star Trek portrayed African-Americans with equal roles as well. Again, Nichelle played as Uhura, and there was actually an interesting story between her and Martin Luther King Jr. that changed her life and the future of their show. As the show evolved “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” aired, which centralized, Captain Benjamin Sisko, played by African-American actor Avery Brooks.

Dr. Mae Jemison
The role Nichelle Nicoles played as Lt. Uhura is what inspired Astronaut, Dr. Mae Jemison to become the very first African-American woman in space, onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour back in 1992. Interestingly enough, she also had a cameo on Star Trek: The Next Generation, being the first real astronaut to appear on a TV series, playing as Lt. Junior Grade Palmer.

LGBTQA
Star Trek’s progressive approach on sexual diversity portrayed interracial, interspecies, poly-amorous, or even same-sex relationships. The show’s first controversial same-sex kiss aired on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s episode, “Rejoined” in 1995. Lt. Hawk from ST: First Contact, was written as a gay character in several Star Trek novels, and his boyfriend Ranul Keru served onboard the U.S.S. Titan after Hawke's death. George Takei, well-known Japanese actor who originally played Sulu, and actor Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in the recent Star Trek reboots, both came out as gay. These great actors now proudly embrace it and help advocate the rights of the LGBTQA community.

Positive Vision of the Future
Star Trek illustrated a positive vision of the future. In this universe, Earth is united with no poverty, no wars between nations, better living standards, the people are more accepting, and we could finally inhabit space and explore the stars.

NASA
It’s what has inspired many of NASA’s scientists and astronomers today in developing better space technologies to further benefit humanity and explore the cosmos. In support of their fans, NASA even named one of their space shuttles after the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek called the Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise (OV-101)

King of Jordan, Abdullah II
Star Trek also inspired the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, who is now currently funding for a Star Trek style resort called the “Red Sea Astrarium” in Aqaba, Jordan. He was such a big fan, he even had a special cameo on Star Trek Voyager on a diplomatic visit to America.

Paramount Park Murcia
Paramount as well wants to build a Star Trek Theme Park in Alhama de Murcia, Spain in 2015!

To the best of my knowledge they are all independant and do not support any cross play alas. At least before this was an issue as the console versions did not support always online, had different controls and no auction house. And at least the PS3/Xbox 360 show no signs of getting RoS at all. That being part of why I have now ordered the pc versions as well.
There is talk about a PS4 version of both towards the end of the year, but that will most likely only support players of the PS4 version as well.

I would love to see a console control set up added to the pc version as well. (Analogue stick movement, dodge rolls and abilities on face/shoulder buttons) but I am sure I will adapt to the pc playstyle and have to learn to kite better. :)

It's a difficult topic. I find myself very loyal to CD and fight in WvW whenever I have the chance. I would see a server transfer for the guild as a last resort option... it would be very difficult to ask everyone to pay for transfers.

The majority of my time in GW2 is spent in WvW so I know how you feel. I believe we have a superior base of skilled WvWers, but our numbers are just lacking. Due to our skill we've been in the middle rank-wise for ages now, but I'm thinking we have a good future ahead of us once the playerbase balances out. Losing KOME and EK was a huge hit on us... it's recent and CD needs time to get back on it's feet. I personally find server transfers for WvW cowardish and always shake my head in disgust when I see Kome or EK... not only that... Kome left us for a server we were kicking butt against. We would have wiped the floor with HoD and NSP if the sudden guild transfers didn't occur.

I think it's very important to start getting guilds into WvW. I've had a hard time finding anyone to lead us as a commander in WvW so that's one reason why SWVG isn't completely into Wuv. I am constantly looking for a commander and will glady help with the costs of buying the badge... but they'd have to be very dedicated to the battlefield.

Keep your chin up. Hopefully we'll get some transfers TO CD that will help. If you're getting discouraged in the main WvW maps... I find that when we're doing bad on those maps, it's usually the opposite situation in Edge of the Mists. So if you need a pick me up... try EotM until our next match :P

I have been playing it a lot on Xbox 360 since it came out. Near max level Monk. Others like Demon Hunter still in first playthrough.

I grabbed the free version from Battle.net and will buy the games from Amazon, where they are almost £20gbp cheaper than from Battle.net itself... (£49 Amazon v £66 on Battle.net)

SamRonin79 on Battle/net currently.

The console versions did add some nice touches such as dodge rolls using analogue sticks. Adds a nice evasive touch that pc version does not have. Also no alway online for Console version.
Main downside of the console versions (PS3/Xbox360) is that the lighting and some animation were cut/reduced for them. Enemies like the Skeleton King spirit form just pop up rather than rising through the floor etc.

So we can have clans and communities now, I started a clan SPQR cause I'm a Romanophile and couldn't resist having SPQR next to my name, anyone in Stonewall is welcome to join OR Stonewall could decide to start it's own clan, there's also a Gaymers community, and I'll be adding some of your battletags tonight :)

I preordered, so I'll be in game Sunday as well. So annoying that they start the early access at the end of the weekend, rather than say, Friday or Saturday when more people would be likely to benefit more from it. But, better 1 day than none I guess!

OK, so at 6:00am CDT this Sunday I will be logging in and starting Companions of Stonewall. I chose that name because the Companion concept in Elder Scrolls, Skyrim particularly, has a storied history. I will look forward to inviting you both. We will be learning together so I will welcome your wisdom and your good patience.

Is this guild still operating? If so how do I get and invite?

I don't think the guild has seen much activity lately, but send a message to Halish. He should be able to help with getting you an invite :)

Alternatively, there is another (non-Stonewall) LGBT guild on the server, The Lords of Light.

I seem to remember that during the first few months after release, CD used to be in the top 6 servers, as far as WvW is concerned. Nowadays, we're more often around rank 13-15, apparently because there's been a constant loss of players who have transferred to other servers.

I know i should be beyond this kind of consideration, and i certainly don't want to sound whiny, but it's sometimes a bit frustrating to get repeatedly rolled over by another server's zerg (which happens also to everybody else on the other servers, i reckon, but just not that often). Of course, other servers had it much worse than us (poor Kaineng and Ehmry Bay), and in 6-9 months, things might be completely different.

Since i'm spending a fair amount of time in the Mists, i was wondering... are we really commited to CD? i know CD is supposed to be the rainbow server, but i've never seen any other active LGBT guild over the last, say, 6 months. Do we have ties with other guilds on the server? In short, is there a real reason to stay on CD, as a player or as a guild?

I'm not advocating for the whole guild to transfer to another server, but i must admit i'm starting to think about it.
