no offense.. I just think it causes a lot of confusion to name a backup server.. and that influence won't matter to the guild because it can't be used.. I'm hoping ANet is kind enough to have some free server transfers at the beginning, but keep in mind they may not and it could cost money to transfer later..

I happen to agree with Halish here. I wouldn't bother speculating on a home server because we really don't know what the servers are even going to be called.

When the game launches, I would hope that people would come here first and see where we are all going to meet. People are going to get excited on launch day and want to start playing ASAP. They may remember seeing what was posted originally and go with that. Just avoid that by leaving it blank until we KNOW for sure. That's the best way to avoid any possible confusion.

I don't like the idea of naming an official "contingency" server and I'll try and explain why.

I think we'd risk confusing people who "glance" rather than read the website into thinking we're rolling on a different server and that could cost them money to fix. At the first possible moment that we can confirm our "home" server, I want to shout it from the rooftops so that as many people as possible can be in the right place. Naming two could muddy this up (it's already a bit muddy with the beta servers. Eternal Grove? Crystal Desert? Darkhaven? I've had more than a few people message me confused).

If you go as far as to create a temporary "guild" so that your influence isn't wasted (so to speak, it'll be wasted when you move servers anyway) then you lose the social aspect of being in Vanguard. You can only represent one guild at a time and if you're all off in the "back up" server guild, you won't be able to communicate with the rest of the guild. Again this could cause confusion when somebody thinks we only have 10 members in the guild when we actually have a whole lot more.

The initial "cap" for members in the guild is 50. I think we'll hit this almost immediately and thus we'll need to expand to 100 within the first few hours. Being able to expand to 100 members takes 1s and you need to have enough members online and representing your guild to be able to do this. Having 50 members offline or representing other guilds would stop us being able to expand the roster and thus people would be left with no way to get invited into the guild. I'm losing sleep over this because I'm going to invite people as quickly as possible and I'm worried if enough people aren't online we may hit that wall anyway.

Also people tend to make a "home" for themselves and get attached really quickly. If we start making things official and creating back up guilds then we risk creating a splinter faction that we would have to support in the same way we do with Vanguard or risk losing some of our member base completely, this would be more work from an organisational standpoint with no benefit.

I really understand the worry that you'll be left in the wilderness but this is only going to be a problem when the game first launches. I hope to play Guild Wars 2 for years and if a rocky start is what we have to put up with then so be it, it'll all work out in the end.

I like sort of mythical names that inspire beauty and wonder and seem to have exploration connotations or my favorite ship names from other genres. My main (Jacien) has had ships named: Copernicus, Prospero, Aurora (Stargate Atlantis), Axiom (Wall-E), and Mobius. And I named my favorite little Luna Class the Oberon. One- because luna class starships are always named after a moon in Earth's solar system (there are 145 moons round these parts) and I thought it fitting to name it after the "Fairy King."

I named my Tac's Tactial Escort The USS Caliburn because that was King Arthur's first sword that was broken into 3 pieces and reforged into Excalibur, a perfect name for a Prometheus class star ship.

I've given my Klingon Tac's ships the names of mythical greek monsters like Manticore, Chimera, Basilisk, Gorgon (I know, I'm biting off of Admiral Dala) and my Orion Slave boy flies the Slovenly Concubine (I'm rather proud of that name.)

I don't think I was clear in my suggestion - my bad. The suggestion is also made without knowing exactly how influence is managed across servers while representing the same guild. Hopefully ArenaNet has thought of this and has a way to manage the influence accordingly. "Guesting" may also be the answer that makes this issue moot.

With that caveat -

#1 Primary Focus: Join the guilds server of choice ASAP.

Just keep in mind that it is possible there will be people that are not able to get in right away. Why not have a plan that at the least - suggests - all of those people try to join the same server so they can benefit from each others company as well as consolidated influence?

And if you're concerned that the backup server is full - that's not a good reason not to have a contingency. You can only plan so far- but at least you planned. You can pick a backup server with a really bad name :)

Think of the positive - those 5, 10, 15?(etc) unlucky folks who cant join the main server all joined the backup instead and they can go exploring as a guild.... roll, roll, roll in ze hay!

Yeah you'll be able to join the guild if you end up on a different server. You can still take part in the guild chat.

I agree that you should focus on just 1server, at least I think we can join the guild even if you're on a different server, no? +Join as guest to the server or something like that to level together..

I also like the suggestion to just wait until they make the server bigger if its full, because they will probably do it. The only that sux is you wont get to reserve your names and wait the server isnt full anymore to start playing...

It's best we focus on trying to get everyone onto the main server. It may just be a case of waiting until a little later and trying again (this seemed to work for some people during the beta weekends).

So we can likely agree guildmates on a server different from the home server will not earn influence for the main influence 'bank'.

In the event (permanent server of choice) is full and guildies cannot join right away - we might want to announce a backup server - so all the guildies waiting to transfer to the main server will be together - building influence they can use in the interim.

Then that might require officers on the backup server so they can manage the local influence...

yesh that server thing sux. But I think you can transfer if you pay anyways, Im jumping in at headstart so I hope this wont be a problem. :/ If it is I'll pay money to get there.
