Re: Doctor Who?...

May 20 2011
I liked the Something Old New Borrowed Blue sillyness! That bit was actually pretty clever. As for the holes in the series, think of them more as paradoxes. As for the Doc only being a hundred years older and the FBI guy only 50 is because the Doctor did not live out those 100 years in 20th century America, he's a time traveler so he'd been off adventuring without Amy, Rory, and River for a century and then came back to that particular place and time. As for his death by the spaceman; He's cheated death before (remember last season's finale we he fell down the museum stairs and died?) and he came back because through one of those paradoxes he was able to actually avoid that fate. This is what will probably happen this season as well and the Doctor set it up by sending out the invitations to his companions. So far I'm liking the season a lot.

I really liked the darker BSG-like tone of SGU but the first season was a bit directionless. I realize that they were trying to build a good foundation for the later seasons. TV networks these days have no patience whatsoever. The way they ended it did seem like it could be set up for another season or a movie, we can only hope.

To respond to the statement about Cryptic and City of Heroes/Villains. Cryptic did in fact originally create COH/V. However the higher ups had a falling out with NCSoft who owned the proprietary rights to the COH/V universe. So Cryptic basically split, about 1/3 of their workforce stayed with NCSoft and created Paragon Studios to replace Cryptic. They sold off the little bit of shares and rights they had to the engines to NCSoft. Hence they created Champions Online because at the time they knew superheroes. And since Cryptic was one of the father figures, credit has to be given to them for their work, so their name is still on the product in places.. That "experience" with MMO engines, also gave them a foot in the door when they bid on the Star Trek liscence as well.. ;)

I have to admit I wish Cryptic would have mad CO more like COH... I know that's bad, but wow I loved COH :P

Hm, that sucks, but more for the people at Cryptic. I'm not too worried about the game for the time being. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that my lifetime sub has actually broken even by now, so I'm not worried about having lost money either. :P

The one company I really, really do not want buying Cryptic is Activision-Blizzard, and that's mostly because of the Activision section. They way they run products into the ground and treat their employees is downright shameful. If Bobby Kotick gets his hands on Cryptic, that is when I will pour a 40 on the curb, as STO's demise will be all but certain.

I don't think Activision will ever pick up STO. I have to admit they were the best designers of Star Trek gaming in my opinion, but after all the law suits I don't think they'd consider it. I also agree they are terrible to their employees and while they made good games they often ran them into the ground, SFC3 anyone? Unless there is speculation I haven't heard :P

It's shocking news definitely but I'm not too concerened. Cryptic is a good company that has made some very successful and quality products. I'm sure Atari invested a lot in the development of STO which is probably a good sized part of their profit losses over the last two years. They were hoping to get a quick return on a sizeable investment but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way and it seems a lot of companies have forgotten that. It's like the TV networks that cancel TV shows in their first or second seasons before they can actually build a sizable audience. But this'll probably be a good thing for Cryptic because once they find a new home (and they will) they will no longer owe Atari for their losses and they'll go on doing what they do. The way that press release was worded was a little overdramatized; companies do indeed get bought, sold, traded, merged, invested, and divested all the time by larger corporations all the time. Unless the company is being dissolved and sold off bit by bit (which Cryptic isn't) it's things don't really change much for the company itself. I work next door to Konami and know some people there and they've said that Cryptic has nothing to worry about although they do think its strange that this happened almost 2 months ago and this is the first anyone's hearing about it.

So basically Cryptic would have to buy Atari out or be bought by someone else otherwise they would go bust?

Meh I'm sure it'll sort itself out, if not well its not the end of the world.

Re: Atari Drops Cryptic

May 19 2011
Cryptic was it's own company, but back in 2008 (I think) Atari was trying to get more into the MMO market and bought Cryptic. Now Atari is looking to sell them again, possibly turning a profit from when they originally bought them.

Forgive my ignorance of the gaming industry but what happens if no one picks up Cryptic? Can they carry on as a lone venture?

Was Cryptic a division within Atari?

My head hurts :-(

This has happened to a game I currently play, City of Heroes/Villians, before. Another studio picked up the game, but "Cryptic" still has its logo on the game to some degree. Couldn't tell you what income they derive from that, if any.

I think what will happen to STO will depend on who Cryptic gets sold to, when, and what the terms are.
I do think it a bit odd that Jack & Zinc get announced as returning, then shortly thereafter Cryptic gets sold.

Also what is odd is that this supposedly happened about 45 days ago, and it's just now getting reported? Usually divestures get a bit more...buzz than this, esp. for an IP like Star Trek (and IIRC, Cryptic or Atari also owns the whole of the Champs IP, including the paper 'n dice game, as well as the MMO.)

Of course, there could be some financial maneuvering we're not aware of, but if you really think about it, if a company runs STO properly, it could be a real cash cow.
But, someone thought that about SWG, and look how that turned out...then you have WoW.

Should be interesting. Looks like someone's going to have to take all the Atari logos out of CO as well.

Very interesting stuff :D Thanx for the info :) I really hope the uni course I take next includes a lot of this stuff. My masters and honours only really included payments and rates over time so it's kinda interesting to here how this stuff would work between Cryptic and Atari :)
