Laughs, and here I just finished a new short story that was just under 2000 words.

Doh!  Post whichever you like!  The soft word-count cap was meant as a means of ensuring that we wouldn't be reading the next Lord of the Rings style trilogy ;)

Stonewall Gaming Network is excited to announce another Character #WritingContest, running now, through December 5th, 2016, and we're extra excited to be giving away some unique and amazing prizes for the participants and the winner of this event!

This contest is open to all members of the Stonewall community, regardless of which game you play!  We know that your in-game characters are a unique representation of part of your personality that you may not normally have the opportunity to share.  That's why we've decided to offer you this opportunity to share the story of any one of your characters in any game that you may play, whether it be Star Trek Online, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, or another game entirely!  Share your creativity with us!  We're excited to read all about your character's latest or most epic adventure!  Share your creativity with us here, in this thread, for your chance to win prizes!

To participate in Stonewall's character writing contest, you must post your entry here, in this thread, before 11:59 PM Pacific time, on December 4th, 2016.  Your posted entry must comply with these additional six rules to be eligible:

1.  Your story must relate to one of your in-game character's most epic missions or adventures
2.  Your story must be written in English (so the judges can understand it)
3.  Your story must be your own original work (plagiarism will result in disqualification)
4.  Your story must include the game/world that your character exists in, their name and race or species
5.  Don't make your story novel length; we need to be able to read it in a single sitting!
6.  The content of your biography must not be edited after the submission deadline

Only one entry per community member, please.  While we encourage you to include graphics to supplement your character's adventure story, only the written narrative portion of your entry will be judged.

The winning contest entry be recognized on our Facebook and Twitter social media feeds.  The winner will also be entitled to choose from one of three different prize packages that we've assembled.  Each pack is geared toward one of the three main games played in the Stonewall Gaming Network, namely: a Star Trek Online prize pack, a Guild Wars 2 prize pack or a Star Wars: The Old Republic prize pack.  We also have participation prizes for all those who enter!  The winner will be able to choose one of the three following prize packs:

Star Trek Online Themed Prize Pack:

1.  6 Stonewall Credits
2.  A super-rare holographic TOS bridge crew set

*Stonewall credits can be saved and/or redeemed for in-game merchandise through the Stonewall Credits Store.

Guild Wars 2 Themed Prize Pack:

1.  A Heart of Thorns expansion unlock code
2.  A hand-crafted set of exotic armor, weapons and jewels for a level 80 toon (donated by @whiteonmyoji)

Star Wars Themed Prize Pack:

1.  2,400 Cartel Coins!

Good luck to all participants!  We can't wait to read your character's adventures!

This month's Mindtools topic for a successful life is:  Constructive Controversy

"Improving Solutions by Arguing For and Against Your Options.

In general, we like to consult others when there's a problem to solve or a decision to make. We do this because we know that, as individuals, we have limited perspectives; and what may at first appear to be the best solution from one vantage point may no longer seem so after we've seen a fuller picture." -Mindtools

What is Constructive Controversy?
This problem-solving approach was introduced by David Johnson and Roger Johnson in 1979. It has been researched and validated, and it's recognized as a leading model for developing robust and creative solutions to problems. The technique draws on five key assumptions:

1. We adopt an initial perspective towards a problem based on our personal experiences and perceptions.

2. The process of persuading others to agree with us strengthens our belief that we are right.

3. When confronted with competing viewpoints, we begin to doubt our rationale.

4. This doubt causes us to seek more information and build a better perspective, because we want to be confident with our choice.

5. This search for a fuller perspective leads to better overall decision making.

I use Firefox, and I don't see the font change unless I actually view the code. Since I have FF locked the hell down with regard to tracking, scripting and ads so I opened a couple of those links in Chrome to see it in a less restricted browser, and instead of displaying in a Helvetica/sans font, they appear in Times NR. Dafuq???

These all seem to be posts from either before the forum engine change or very soon after...could it be an artifact of the DB export, maybe, when the original forum posts were migrated to the new platform? I think an indication might be if there are any of those font tags in more recent posts. If not, I'd suspect it was something in the migration process.

Otherwise, I got nothing.

Nope, not copying from the editor, just copying from the already posted post itself and pasted that in the editor.

Okay, that's odd. What browser do you use?

Google Chrome.

I have a preset text on Evernote.  If I am not at home, I use the Evernote app on my phone, there's an option to remove formatting which I have done consistently in the past because it is actually easier for me to copy from Evernote and paste into the website's editor.

If I am at home, I open my Evernote program, copy my preset welcome text and paste it into the editor.  That's about all I do, I hope this helps!

If I caught my earlier posts correctly (remember when you said you'd migrated to google?)

Guess who the largest known user of Lato fonts are? That's right, boys and girls...

It would seem that Google has a bit of hidden code somewhere that creates a "failsafe" font code in cases where browsers are not capable of rendering the chosen font and then it drops back through the list of fonts in the failsafe until one is rendered properly.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but you can always contact Google's support team to find out if this is intentional on their end or not and if there's a way to cut it.

Based on my understanding: it would appear that google is using the entire lato-font family as a default group.

That's not Google's doing. That's how the font-family declaration in CSS works. Fonts are listed in order of priority and the first one available is the one displayed. This particular font stack is the one that our website uses. Lato and Helvetica Neue are both pretty popular fonts.

Only our domains (eg stonewallgaming.net) are hosted with Google. Not the hosting of the actual website. That's hosted on another service, OpenShift.
