Star Trek Online: officially licensed sexism

July 04 2016
Funny, I had the same video recommended to me this morning. I already knew about the Orions' origins from a few TOS episodes. Perhaps I'm misremembering, but didn't a subsequent work attempt to explain that feminine Orions are, contrary to their original depiction as sex slaves, actually the rulers of their society? And being bought and sold as a sex slave as okay because, hey, there's power up for grabs? Perhaps it was from ENT. I always viewed that as the writers trying to say "see, we're not sexist, seeee!"

Me too! I have always been awed at space and the beyond. What attracted me to Star Trek was that and the fact that Star Trek was progressive in the acceptance of everyone. (This was when I was struggling with being gay and not out of the closet yet)

I've been a huge astronomy fan since I was young, and it was what initially got me interested in Star Trek. The first thing I really read that was debatable was whether the universe would expand forever and destroy itself in "The Great Rip" or if it would eventually collapse back in on itself in "The Great Crunch". Astronomy as a whole is just so full of unknowns that it will always be something of great interest to me.

Around number 6, they reach Star Trek Online and the Orion. Thought what they had to say was worth a laugh, so I'm sharing it with everyone else.

My favorite Mindtools tip for a successful life is:  Emotional Intelligence

"What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)?

We all have different personalities, different wants and needs, and different ways of showing our emotions. Navigating through this all takes tact and cleverness – especially if we hope to succeed in life. This is where EI becomes important.

EI is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they're telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. It also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively." -Mindtools

Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence:

1. Self-Awareness – People with high EI are usually very self-aware. They understand their emotions, and because of this, they don't let their feelings rule them. They're confident – because they trust their intuition and don't let their emotions get out of control.

They're also willing to take an honest look at themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they work on these areas so they can perform better. Many people believe that this self-awareness is the most important part of EI.

2. Self-Regulation – This is the ability to control emotions and impulses. People who self-regulate typically don't allow themselves to become too angry or jealous, and they don't make impulsive, careless decisions. They think before they act. Characteristics of self-regulation are thoughtfulness, comfort with change, integrity, and the ability to say no.

3. Motivation – People with a high degree of EI are usually motivated. They're willing to defer immediate results for long-term success. They're highly productive, love a challenge, and are very effective in whatever they do.

4. Empathy – This is perhaps the second-most important element of EI. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand the wants, needs, and viewpoints of those around you. People with empathy are good at recognizing the feelings of others, even when those feelings may not be obvious. As a result, empathetic people are usually excellent at managing relationships, listening, and relating to others. They avoid stereotyping and judging too quickly, and they live their lives in a very open, honest way.

5. Social Skills – It's usually easy to talk to and like people with good social skills, another sign of high EI. Those with strong social skills are typically team players. Rather than focus on their own success first, they help others develop and shine. They can manage disputes, are excellent communicators, and are masters at building and maintaining relationships.

As you've probably determined, EI can be a key to success in your life – especially in your career. The ability to manage people and relationships is very important in all leaders, so developing and using your EI can be a good way to show others the leader inside of you.

This is so good! but yea very sad... I knew the universe was expanding.. but i prob didnt think that it was taking other galaxys with it.
i love stuff like this, breaking the facts down.

But who knows.. a few hundred years from now other beings.. or breakthrough knowledge of science and different forms of travel may be reachable, at the blink of an eye.
We've still yet to get past the time slowing down when we are exploring vs earth time and managing to keep time in sync.

The Iconians can do it.. why cant we!! :P

If anyone is interested, I follow a channel on youtube that has tons of discovery type 45 min documentary's on it
(I cant sleep without background noise so watching these through the xbox while i drift off helps)

I was watching this and thought how sad, yet how exciting that we at least could explore our own neighborhood.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Re:Star Trek beyond vs Axanar.

I know that there's been a lot of discussion in the fandom about the guidelines for Star Trek fan films that CBS and Paramount have recently released. It's been a polarizing issue in the community, with people taking up sides for and against Axanar, which ultimately appears to have been the catalyst for the lawsuit and the guidelines that followed.

With that said, there are still quality fan films being made and this one in particular, albeit short and simple, is an enjoyable watch and is in keeping with what I feel the true spirit of what fan productions were meant to be. Of interest, is that it appears to abide by a majority (not all) of the guidelines set out, and in my view, is a proof of concept, demonstrating that the guidelines don't necessarily spell doom and the end of quality productions from the fandom.

Give it a watch! Some not terrible eye candy that appears to bat for our team too:

KDF TAC ship recommendations

July 03 2016
Now that I have a tiny bit of discretionary income, I've been picking up dedicated factional boats for my alts. I spent my Pride Weekend prize on a D'Kora Marauder for my Ferengi captain since the exchange price suddenly dropped to less than 1/3 of what it was a couple weeks ago(!), and I picked up a Malem Light Warbird from the C-Store for my Romulans. As usual, my poor neglected Klingon TAC toon is last on the upgrade list.

He currently flies a T5-U Mogh Battle Cruiser and it's not a bad boat at all, but I eventually want him to have a KDF T6. I'll have the Risa event's Vorgon escort before long and I'm sure that will do for a while, but I'm kind of a canon stickler and would definitely prefer a Klingon Raptor or Battle Cruiser over something cross-faction. I'm looking at the Qa'Tel Flight Deck Raptor as an option, but I'd appreciate some ship-choice advice from more experienced KDF captains.

He spends most of his time in the Badlands so I value both durability and maneuverability over pretty much all other considerations (see 125th Rule of Acquisition). I'm not really a fan of glass-cannon BoP's despite the awesomeness of battle cloaks. Does anyone have any pro/con input on the Qa'Tel, and/or other KDF options for a TAC captain? Raptors, battle cruisers, carriers, destroyers, dreadnoughts etc.?

Qapla'!
