Counterpoint Walkthru

October 30 2015
Quote by alex284
From this past week, I've found that the easiest place to get Terran marks is in the new space queue, Counterpoint.

So, the qualifying question to this is - how much of that is due to the Badlands Battlezone:

1) Being rampant with lag (at least until Thursday's patch)?

2) Other players not yet being familiar with BZ mechanics and objectives?

(Also, excellent guide here)

Counterpoint Walkthru

October 30 2015
From this past week, I've found that the easiest place to get Terran marks is in the new space queue, Counterpoint. I put together a little walkthru as people come to play S11 this weekend (I'll be updating this in the future as the strategy develops).

Part 1

Required Objectives:

  • Clear the ships (Normal, Advanced, Elite)
  • Keep ds9 above 50% (Elite)

Optional Objectives:

  • Keep DS9 above 75% (Normal, Advanced)

Strategy

Fly to DS9 and kill all the Terran ships. Don't worry about healing DS9 because it's pretty solid.

Part 2

Required Objectives:

  • Close 5 portals (Elite)

Optional objectives:

  • Keep DS9 above 75% (Normal, Advanced, Elite)
  • Close 5 portals (Normal, Advanced)
  • Bonus: close additional portals (Normal, Advanced)

Strategy

There are portals that spawn several dozen kilometers from DS9 along with a few Terran ships. 2 or 3 players should go to these (they are marked on your map in white) to clear the Terran ships and close the portals, while the others stay and defend DS9. There are only 2 rifts open at a time, so everyone scrambling to the portals isn't efficient.

Taking damage stops the portal-closing process, so that's why we clear the ships first.

Part 3

Required Objectives:

  • 15 Assault teams landed (Elite)

Optional Objectives:

  • Assault teams landed [just a counter] (Normal, Advanced)
  • Bonus assault teams landed [counter] (Elite)
  • Get Terok Nor's average health to below 50% (Normal, Advanced, Elite)
  • Keep DS9's average health above 50% (Normal, Advanced, Elite)

Strategy

This phase can be tricky because there's a lot going on. But you can do it in 2 easy steps:

a) Everyone go to Terok Nor and pew pew it down to 35-40%. Then stop shooting! This way you don't trigger its self-heals.

b) Now ferry assault teams from DS9 to Terok Nor. Don't shoot at Terok Nor, and you don't really need to fire at the ships that are attacking DS9 because they're pretty weak (the worst I've seen in a pug is DS9 getting down to 94% average health).

You can do stuff while transporting, so use heals and Tactical Teams to keep your health up (your shields go down or transport), and use Attack Pattern Omega, Evasive Maneuvers, and Emergency Power to Weapons to keep moving. You don't need to stay close to either station while the transport process is occurring.

[update: running this queue this weekend on normal and advanced makes me wonder if this is all necessary, if it's not more efficient to just transport troops and shoot at TN when you're near it. On elite, though, I think it still makes sense.]

Phase 4

Optional Objective:
  • Defeat reinforcement groups in 3 minutes (Normal, Advanced, Elite)

Strategy

Pew pew pew! Take that, Admiral Leeta of the ISS Enterprise!

It's over!

If perchance you get booted for inactivity, it is wildy simple to be re-added once you've been in the fleet--just ask in game for a fleet captain to add you.

I think at this point I am more of the socialite and explorer. I have some characters that are all about the damage potential/achiever style of play, but mainly I focus on the aforementioned.

Thanks Roops, that's really helpful. There are 8 flax nodes and I believe you can get them on multiple characters too.

Dulfy mentions, "There is a flax seed farm below the Jaka Itzel Waypoint in Verdant brink. Drop down all the way to the very bottom. You can farm this daily."

I think when it comes to gameplay, I like really getting into a character. I really enjoy playing healers/support characters. It's not that I don't enjoy being the one in front furiously mashing away at enemies' health, but I prefer sort of being the glue on a team. Though, when it comes to STO, I'll never say no to the chance to launch 9 grav wells and wipe everything out with pure science abilities ;)

Ground wise, I think I'm pretty well varied between overwhelming DPS, ability-based control, healing, and tanking.

tl;dr Mostly a healer/tank.

Well I got a computer to run sto but they guy put linux on it. Linux elementary. So I still cannot play STO. I heed a copy of windows for it but have no friends to help me out. I tried downloading a ISO of windows but Linux will not let me make a boot disk. So I am still up the creek but still trying. Please don't kick me out of the fleet for inactivity, I am working hard to get back into the game

thanks everyone

Linseed Oil tip for making guild improvements

October 28 2015
Hey all, just found this on the wiki:

TIP: Currently, the best way to get Vial of Linseed Oil is to do an achievement from HoT "Torn from the Sky" mission (First mission after prologue).
In this achievement, you must select the option to Help the soldiers build up their defenses. During the night attack, you must defend the turret. If you do this succesfully, you will receive 10 Vial of Linseed Oil.

This is really helpful as 10 Vials is enough for 3 empty kegs, an ingredient for our tavern upgrades in our guild hall. (also requires 30 mithril ingots and elder wood planks, but those are easy to get.) If 10 people do this achievement, we could make 30 kegs without buying anything and make good progress on our next upgrade. Just a neat tip I found that I thought I'd share :)

Cheers!

I'm none of those types. I am the storyteller--I focus a lot on character creation, and I imagine often complex narratives regarding my ships, crews, and uniforms. It's why I've got 21 toons.

That's for this game, though, where the opportunity to create "pets" as well as toons allows for much greater storytelling. I've been playing GW2 a lot lately, and it's very much about exploration, which I've discovered I really enjoy. And I think part of my initial disappointment with STO is that, with a franchise that is built on the idea of exploration, we didn't really have any. The early star-cluster explorations, with their janky first-contact set-up, were as close as we got, and once they got rid of those, we weren't really exploring anymore. Hopefully Season 11 is what it's cracked up to be and we get some genuine exploring (that's not railroaded).

The Bartle archetypes are at best qualitative descriptors, which doesn't mean they don't have value - only that value has decided limits. They kind of apply some sort of meaning to what it means to be an 'Achiever' or a 'Killer' in how a player participates in a game. But they're built into the definitions that Bartle chose to apply, and the questions he asks.

Ultimately, it offers a framework for the kinds of rewards that mediate how players respond to the game; even if the language itself is intrinsically biased by the framework that supports it.

And game developers may not build around Bartle - but I imagine one would be hard-pressed to spot a dev that isn't at least cognizant of the basic idea.

The point of any theoretical model is to simplify the world in order to understand certain parts better, and they always leave something out (it's their nature). To me, this classification is saying "People come to games for different reasons" and "these reasons are not infinite." It's interesting to me because it provides the beginning of an explanation for why people seem to experience the game in completely different ways.

Whether this particular model is useful for game development isn't all that important to me since I'm not a game developer. Instead, it's more like... a Cosmo quiz for us to share here. :)
