Cost of Star Trek Online Packs

February 22 2015
Yeah, I got some sticker shock looking at the prices of some of the packs for this game.

I also *really* dislike the lock box model of micro transaction. They're essentially ripoffs.

I know I'd be more likely to spend more money on the course of playing a game if things were more reasonably priced AND I knew exactly what I was paying for. Not a 96% chance of getting complete garbage.

Like... I'd be more willing to spend $10-15 every couple of months on something cool, rather than drop $50+ all at once a single time.

Dragons Give Life To Gods? (Theory)

February 22 2015
Before I start this is my first post so I hope I placed it in the right section.

So I have spent a sizable chunk of time tonight reading about the Six Human gods and the Six Elder Dragons. I read the history of the dragons and the gods. I've skimmed through all kinds of forums about the same subject I am about to go on about, and it's pretty well accepted that the Gods and the Dragons have nothing in common other then their are six of them. This is mostly because the corresponding elements and magics from the dragons don't perfectly match up. Well I am about to challenge this, so first let me state my theory.

The Elder Dragons are really old, way older then the Six Human gods. For all we know they have always been. We know that the Dragons go through cycles of "Awakenings". Where they wake up, destroy everything they can, consuming magic as they do so, then fall back asleep. While they are asleep they leak magic back into the world. The Elder Dragons themselves while asleep are massive sources of magic that have been harnessed in the past by races like the Asura. In fact most of the races started their civilizations in close proximity to a sleeping dragon as if drawn to the magic there.

My theory is that The Gods, whether they came from the Mists, or were mortals, sought out the dragons and absorbed great powers from them. They absorbed so much power in fact that they ascended into the divine, or just became powerful beyond comprehension much like the dragons themselves. The biggest problem with this theory is that, like I said before the elements don't match up perfectly. But that would be to assume that the gods could only absorb power from one sleeping dragon. Would it be such a stretch for them to be able to pick and choose from each dragon. It's not like the dragons had any say over it. And we have already seen that powers can be divided up when Abaddon's powers where divided between Lyssa and Kormir. It was basically like a power buffet, why would you only feast from one station? I think they took what they could from each Dragon and that's what gave them their specialized abilities.

What do you guys think?

COMPETITION CLOSED

--------------------------------------------------------

@Yaris8: Congratulations, you are the winner of this events STO Selfie competition.
Your managing to take a selfie just as poor Harry Kim was being electrocuted made many of us chuckle. Which in turn burnt an image on our mind of your memorable selfie.

@Chemistryset: a deserving place for a unique image of your poor toon being thrown out into the depth of space. Another one that made us chuckle.. and if you look closely .. im sure you have a cup of coffee still in your hand?

@Akrilon: Not only were we impressed at the angle of the picture, and the almost stomach churning vertigo we encountered while looking down at the drop.. (and the handsome trill spots helped) your detailed back story of the picture gave the selfie a deeper and exciting meaning.

@Knightchucky: We didnt know iphones still existed in STO world, and we were impressed that you managed to make your toon appear as if he were in a bathroom mirror taking a selfie.
For that, We had to invent a whole new award, for Original Selfie.

Thank you so so much for all who took the time to enter.

Winners.. please check your INGAME mail for your Mini prizes

[COMPETITION] S.T.O Selfie

February 21 2015

How take a selfie inGame:
position your screen to how you want it, and press the "print screen" button on your keyboard, like so..

You can take as many print screens as you like, and they will all be stored in your STO screen grab folder in the games root directory
You can normaly find your screen grab folder using this path...

C:\Program Files\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\screenshots

Now to put your image/s on this thread:
  • You will need to upload your screen grab picture.. or your real life selfie to a hosting site, there are many good ones around like tinypic, photobucket etc.. but ive found this one to be the more simple.. postimage.org

  • Browse to the picture you want, and then in the drop down menu resize it to 600x800, so it will fit on a message board.

  • Once that's uploaded it will give you the links you will need to post your image on this thread.
  • Copy the "Direct Link", then hit reply here in this thread..

  • Hit the "Image Link" button, above all the emoticons, then paste your link in it..
  • you can add a fancy caption if you like!

--------------------------------------------

1st, 2nd and 3rd mini prizes will be rewarded for the best selfies, winners will be announced on this thread & during the New Member Mixer event that is taking place ingame 1st March.

CLICK HERE to see the New Member Mixer event Details.

Scientists announce anti-HIV agent so powerful it can work in a vaccine

February 20 2015
Working in a pharmacy I've learned one thing. Insurance companies will go out of the way to say no to a patient. It's utterly heartbreaking to say the medication you need isn't covered, that treatment will be expensive or out of reach, that they don't have a right to feel better. That being said it's way to early to determine if it will be covered or not.

I wanted to know how long the protection last and whether or not that if you were exposed while on the treatment would infection still happens after the effects wore off.

That's the part that has me worried. Its going to be a long while before we can gauge this thing's longterm efficacy. The article says its expected duration will last for years, perhaps decades though.

Quote by Baothezar

Annyywayys. From my understanding of the article, the proposed treatment uses a modified virus that use the machinery of cells to create mimic receptors that would bind onto the virus and render it inert. So this isn't a traditional "Vaccine" where it would use attenuated viruses to stimulate the body to produce antibodies against the real thing. I wanted to know how long the protection last and whether or not that if you were exposed while on the treatment would infection still happens after the effects wore off. My thought on this was that what if we were able to simply produce the mimic receptors with out the use of virus?

From what i gathered, they're using the engineered virus as a delivery to target the specific receptors. Ideally, yeah, i agree getting the virus part out of there would probably sit better with everyone, but im hoping its just a mode of delivery engineered in virus form.

I could also foresee a lot of medical tourism for this if it isn't insured in the US/crazy cost prohibitive. At the same time, if you aren't at risk (though risk factors are seemingly decreed arbitrarily), you wouldn't end up needing it.
