Movies that made you cry...

December 24 2011
I recently purchased the movie Resurrection with Ellen Burstyn, a movie I've been trying to find on DVD forever. In it Ellen's character briefly dies but is brought back to life only to discover she can heal people. That one always gets me teary-eyed. Another little known flick is 'night Mother with Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. It was originally a broadway play that they adapted for this movie. Sissy's character tells her mother (Anne) that she is going to commit suicide, so the whole movie is the mother trying to talk her out of it. Some others that I can think of:

Terms of Endearment - Duh, this one's a given.

Avatar - Those bastards shot down the home tree!! :(

Never Let Me Go - This one really got to me. The premise of the movie is kind of silly, cloned children being raised so their organs can be harvested when they're adults, but damn this one really had me sobbing, not just teary-eyed, I was full-on sobbing. Getting all choked up now just thinking about it.

The Color Purple - OK, if you didn't cry when her sister came back from Africa, then you're pretty much dead inside. :P

Well that's all I can think of off-hand. What about you guys?

Heaven and Earth, the Oliver Stone Vietnam-era film from a Vietnamese woman's perspective. It's the best movie that I will never see again. I still felt emotionally jarred days after watching it.

Stepmom of one my favorite movies to watch when I'm in a slump. But it is just such a good movie. But I'm weird that way, cause when I'm sick, I watch the SAW movies.

"Later Day" got to me.

"Trick" gets me (in a good way) sometimes.

And actually, a little known one called "Dancer, Texas" always gets me.

The first film I actually remember crying my eyes out over, is Empire of the Sun by Steven Spielberg.

I wont ruin it too much if you haven't seen it, but essentially a British family get separated on the outbreak of WWII in Shanghai, when Japan invaded China and the British were forced to evacuate the Shanghai International Settlement. In the evacuation Jamie (The British schoolboy played by Christian Bale) is separated from his parents and ends up in a Japanese concentration camp. We see the journey through his eyes.

****SPOLIERS***

This scene where he's reunited is so poigniant, because Jamies transformation during the ordeal is so much, his parents don't recognise him at first:

it also featured the Welsh language lulaby: Suo Gan

Sixu,

"Empire of the Sun" is one of my favorite films of all time (and yes, it did make me cry). Christian Bale was extraordinary in his role and he was only thirteen!

I loved John Williams' score to the film and especially like that they included "Suo Gan." We sing an Anglicized version every Christmas as it is such an effective melody and so well-received. Here is last year's recording in case you want to hear it:

Suo Gan starts at 13:25 or there abouts.

Thanks so much for the link! Yeah, he was exceptional in the film. I believe i was about 10-11 when I first saw it and its definitely a film that stays with you like Schindlers List. :( :)

Here's the same lulaby in the original Welsh (a little clearer than in EotS!)

Any of The Lord of the Rings movies, and not because they are sad, but because they are just so amazingly beautiful.

Made me cry (a massive feat): Life is Beautiful; Pan's Labrynth; My Dog Skip; What Dreams May Come.

I guess it's a pretty short list for me.

How about tv shows? The final sequence of six feet under. It illustrates the hard truth behind the series, death is a part of life.

I've seen The Color Purple more times than I can count. When I read the message thread subject, that was the first movie that came to mind even before I read the first post. The last scene has me in tears every time. Watching what Celie had to go through her whole life and seeing all those characters develop throughout the movie, sets up the last scene perfectly. Of course it doesn't hurt seeing Oprah get bopped with the sheriff's gun either! But what a movie and a tear jerker!

Pan's Labyrinth!! I totally forgot about that one. Yes I was crying at the end of that one too. For me it had such an ambiguous ending, I don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen it, but there were two ways to interpret the ending, so I always cry. Loved, loved, loved that movie!

Empire of the Sun was great too, haven't seen that since it came out. Another tear jerker for sure. Thanks for all the replies!

In the original Rent score, when Collins does his reprise of "I'll Cover You", I will admit I get a bit teary eyed. His voice coupled with the message of that song really command a presence. I've seen Rent 10 times before it finally stopped playing at the Nederlander.
