Anyone managing to play this at all yet?

My b/f's in the beta and not impressed so far; horrendous lag in every respect, the camera is extremely annoying, you seem to have to select a target three times in order to attack it and again pretty much continuous after that.

It's kinda pretty, but it plays like an early alpha build, not a beta.

I'm really not suprised or passing judgements yet. Its the first real day of an Open beta for a HIGHLY anticipated game. Hell it probably wont be playable till half way through the beta. I'm at least trying to get the client downloaded. I still get a message letting me know that beta keys have been disabled temporarily. So probably not gonna see it tonight. That and my client is STILL downloading, after not wanting to connect all morning :)

Back to Dragon Age: Awakening it is...

I don't even have the drive to log into STO anymore. it sucks too, i remember when i couldnt wait to get home haha. I miss you guys, sorry to be a ghost >.

Ok, I finally got into the game late last night and I'm sure Yezar (who was with me on vent at the time) could tell you how frustrated I was getting.

What you said is absolutely correct, the lag makes it border-line unplayable. It's not rubber banding your character will run smoothly it's just a shame that everything and everyone he runs past simply isn't there. You need to stop and give it a minute or two to allow all the nearby NPC's to eventually show up.

It makes the world seem empty unless you stop every 50 feet.

The camera really is a joke. It fails to follow your character which is what I'm used to and seems to have no option to allow such a thing. You have to physically turn the camera with your mouse if you want to keep the camera behind your character. Very annoying for a good old fashioned gamer like me who uses his mouse to click the abilitys.

What else did you comment on? Oh yes the stupid "target lock" system. To be honest they had this in the first Online Final Fantasy and I hated it then and I just kind of assumed it wouldn't find its way into another game but no it's here. Basically to do any sort of combat you have to first click on the monster then click on it again to go into "attack mode" (at which point your camera will kind of zoom in) and then you will be able to attack it. But this isn't a smooth experience it feels very slow and well single player-ish.

Add to this the fact that there seems to be very little in the way of a tutorial or any real instructions on what you're meant to do. I died last night and I logged off still dead because I didn't know how to release. There's no death text (short of "You can't use that ability. You're KO'd") and no instructions.

All this lends itself to the fact that it feels very much like a old game. The camera feels out of date, the lack of instruction or even general idea of where or what you should be doing feels out of date. Think there's a nice little quest log on your UI? not that I could see had to load up the journal by hand not that that's much help if you don't know the area. Quest Indicators on the NPC's? No chance.

Trying to navigate the map? I can't figure out how to move the damn thing around.

I know it's only beta, but come on it's OPEN BETA the game is released at the end of the month. This isn't a good enough new user experience. Not for the western market and not for me.

The servers are down now but once there up I will try again. These are after all first impressions and things may improve. I hope they improve.

Oh yeah and if any of you are having trouble downloading from the patcher I found this thread which has links to torrents and the files hosted on Megaupload/hotfiles.

http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/12719-open-beta-megauploadutorrent-links-install-instructions/

It's how I've downloaded it because downloading it through the launcher would have taken me weeks.

Got into the OB this morning. Launched the game and to my dismay, my FPS sucks!!!!
I'm gettting real tired of the PC MMO scene. They release games that are only near playable with a super duper $4000 system, or they are specific to video cards (such as STO & nVidia). Just fyi, nVidia branded FFXIV too.. so much for this 1gig ATI hD I spent $200 on...
I played with settings, but it looks like I'm only going to get good FPS if I drop the game to crappy detail levels... even with shadows at standard, buffer at Resolution, ambient and cinematic OFF and just High texture detail at 1280x720 (which DOESN'T stretch to fit fullscreen booooo) I get below 30 FPS easy... I'm at a loss

I have an AMD phenom II quad @2.8ghz, 8gigs system ram, ATI hD 5770 1gig card on windows 7 64bit...
I don't have a low end system by any means... very very disappointed... I can't keep up with computers for the life of me! *sigh*

I'm at work now, will log in later tonight on your server halish. Anybody have suggestions on video settings?? Similar specs ??

Would make me a little happier. As of now, I won't be purchasing it if I can't run it pretty

Finally got everything downloaded and got my code. Got to play for an hour before i had to go. The 360 controller for the PC works AWESOME with this games setup. And that's craziness Rhayne! Your specs are actually better than mine and I've been running it great.

Anywho, I'll be on sometime after work . I'll be making a new character on your server Halish, my character will probably be named Mortisha (something)

If its not too much trouble, can I ask what the settings you're using are? In the Final Fantasy 14 Bet Configuration, under Video and graphics. I just want to know what may be causing me to get low FPS? I dunno but I am going to look into a game pad, the keyboard/mouse combo is clunky at best... feels like a controller would work better..

Re: FF XIV anyone?

September 03 2010
I wouldn't massively blame the settings or your system right. I think everyone's FPS isn't the best and the server lag is causing all sorts of problems.

I've heard that it works better with a controller on some of the forums and to be honest I'm reluctant to try it. I don't really want to play an PC game with a controller out of principle. I like my keyboard and mouse.

And I think to add as a friend you need both first and second names so it's Kahali Medi.

Once you guys get sorted let me know and i'll try and add you.

Re: FF XIV anyone?

Ya, you're right. I'll give it a bit. I also read the game is heavily Intel and nVidia optimized but I have an AMD cpu and ATI gpu, go figures, sounds like STO :-/ that's too bad its become such a brand war in PC Hardware & gaming.

Gonna mess with a few more things when I get home tonight. I really want to run it fullscreen, but if I set it at any resolution smaller then my monitors native 1600x900 the image doesn't scale to fit my monitor... like 1280x720 is surrounded by a large black border on all 4 sides when full screened. If that's how it works I might as well just run it windowed.

Disabling Windows Aero should improve performance a bit too I would assume. I dunno , ill spend all night tinkering haha

And double By The Way...

I fixed my graphics issues. All i can say is... WOW!
The cinematics were spine tingling pretty.
Graphics are A+! 1600x900, buffering at Resolution, everything on except Ambient and Depth of Field. But thats ok. It runs 30+ FPS now.

It looks like Dragon Age and an MMO had uber hawt monkey sex. Its just visually stunning.

The controls i cant say impressed me at first... untill i took my hand off the mouse and steered First Person with the NumPad. It reminds me of EverQuest controls... which is another CHECK in my book =D NumPad enter targets and initiates combat, once you get the keyboard knack for scrolling through attacks and stuff its alot easier.

i havent done more then make 2 characters and watch the intros, then run around... but still! =D

I might actually like this one =D
