Favorite, non-conventional, Sci-Fi Movies

October 21 2010
I love sci-fi movies and I've darn well seen most of the good ones, specially all of the big blockbuster ones. Every now and then, I run into really good sci-fi movies though, that I just love, but most people haven't ever heard of. So I figured I'd post them here to share and see if anyone else has some of their own not-so-popular sci-fi movies they'd suggest I watch.

Here's the ones I've thought of so far:

Sunshine
City of Ember
Moon

My favourite "unconventional" Science Fiction films include relatively recent releases like:

Children of Men
Deja Vu
28 Days Later

However I will always love the films I watched growing, they made me fall in love with the genre, and you might not have seen them yet:

Tron
Millennium
Blade Runner
The Last Starfighter
Brazil
Cocoon 1&2
D.A.R.Y.L
Flight of the Navigator

Children of Men was pretty good, although I think it was alot more about the action and adventure than the sci-fi. I enjoyed the premise.

Deja Va was so-so.

I hate to admit this, but I don't think I've ever seen Tron! Or atleast, I was very young when I saw it. I can't believe I missed that. I'll have to rectify that shortly.

I always confuse Blade Runner with that really bad sci-fi movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger where he doesn't know what reality is real. I need to rewatch it.

The rest look interesting so I'll check them out. The old ones are hard to find to stream though.

These were probably more popular than what you're asking for, but all worth watching IMO:

The Abyss
Contact
Serenity
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
Lawnmower Man
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Running Man
The Last Starfighter
Enemy Mine
The Fly

Hehe....that should keep you busy for a while :-)

The Abyss is an A+.
I love Contact and watched it recently. I would LOVE it if they made a sequel.
Serenity was very good and made me watch the Firefly series.
Lawnmower Man was a bit cheesy, but decent.
The Fly was just gross.

I'll check out the other shortly. :) Thanks!

I'm unclear on what you mean by "non-conventional Sci-Fi Movies." Do you mean anything that's not a big budget Hollywood blockbuster? Or does it need to be talky rather than action-packed? How about comedies with a sci-fi bent?

Three come to mind:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension
Big Trouble in Little China
Galaxy Quest

But I don't know if they count.

As I recall, the only thing I liked about that movie was Casper Van Dien's naked butt in the shower scene. Actually, now that I think about it, that's the only thing I remember about that movie. Wasn't Barney Stinson in it, too? As some kind of Nazi psychic?

Would you like to know more? :p

Starship Troopers is an awesome film, one of my personal favourites. First time I watched it I was about 11 years old and I've loved it ever since.

And yes Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) is in it and he's awesome. I only learned recently that he's one of us.

I love forbidden planet, creatures from the id and all that.

I liked Event Horizon back in the day, though watching it now that I'm older it's cheezy as hell.

My favorite non-traditional sci-fi would be Eternal Sunshine though.

This is a tough topic to reply to! I've done some research in order to remember some names that I've forgotten, and here they are:

2046 - because of my fascination with Asian films.

The Island - I thought this one was pretty good, but no one talks about it!

The Fountain - because of the book... very good, and very unconventional in my opinion :)

Dark City - an ex showed me this film a few years back, and it was amazing!

Equilibrium - my bf made me watch this one, and I loved it :)

Aeon Flux - very unconventional, very good, and no one talks about it! :P

Planet of the Dinosaurs - just for fun in this list... I loved this one as a kid for some reason. Probably because I loved space and dinosaurs, so it was a catch-all ;) It's fun to watch (you can see the whole thing on YouTube) but not in a serious way lol.

My favorite sci-fi film is still The Fifth Element. I just love Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis. Gary Oldman is pretty awesome too :side:

So there you have it, some unconventional sci-fi films and my personal fav. I'm sure there are plenty more that I can't think of right now. I've seen too many movies :S
