Re: V

My partner watches the new V series, but I haven't been able to get behind it. It suffers from (among other things) taking itself too seriously, and the NBC (and now ABC) tendency to over-hype everything and try to turn it into an Event. (Yeah, NBC even named another over-hyped series The Event, in a desperate plea to viewers.)

I'm old enough to remember when the original V miniseries came out. It was groundbreaking for its time, doing what good science fiction is supposed to do: hold up a mirror to our society. V was a heavy-handed Holocaust allegory, full of obviously good good-guys, obviously bad bad-guys, obviously immoral collaborators, and guinea-pig-eating aliens. It was also great fun, and a wonderfully heroic story of ordinary people standing up against tyranny. The final showdown between Julie and Diana (I won't spoil it if you want to Netflix it) still gives me chills.

(Please note these remarks only apply to the original miniseries. The subsequent mini- and regular series weren't as good. But I hear Diana from the original shows is being brought into the new series, so you might want to check out the old stuff before January.)

Sure, it's schmaltzy, and very 1983. But I highly recommend the original miniseries. It was written by Kenneth Johnson, who wrote for The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman (in fact, he wrote the episode of the former that introduced the latter), The Incredible Hulk, and Alien Nation. When he was on top of his game, Johnson was a master storyteller.

He could also turn out some pretty dire dreck, although to be fair many of those were sequels to his original stories and may have involved a) other writers, b) excessive input from the studio, and c) not enough time.

All of this is just my opinion, YMMV. I'm just very opinionated about what I consider Kenneth Johnson's best works. He is one of my heroes.

I agree, I was very young when V was shown in the UK, but it stayed with me and provided some truly great TV moments (the gerbil, yuck). I hope they don't follow the recent pattern of US TV shows where they try to stretch the storyline out and then have to resolve everything in one episode, or not at all, as the network have suddenly cancelled it.

You are still very young...

I loved the old V and I like certain things about the new V. SciFi shows are limited, so I like to watch them all.

I want a new ST one and would love Babylon 5

in a lifetime long ago, I dated Scott Wolfe - this was back when Party of Five was on the air. Love "V", even if it's weird seeing him on it, but good on him - excited to see what happens next on the show! I would have been terribly disappointed in ABC Family for doing that. I'm still miffed that they dropped Kyle XY!

Seriously? I didn't even know he was, um, dateable.

This from IMDB:

Director Doug Liman originally did not want to cast him in Go (1999) because Katie Holmes was already in the movie, and he did not want the movie to star 2 TV actors. However, he saw him talking in a hallway with Jay Mohr and realized that the chemistry between the two would be good in the movie.

(He and Jay played the gay couple in the movie "Go!" They do make a cute couple.)

What I've seen of the new V I like. I especially like Anna, I think she's a really good SciFi villian. I loved her as Adria in SG1. I haven't been able to get completely into it cuz I just don't have the time even with DVR but I look forward to the new season. Oh and Scott Wolfe is "Peeps"???? I think I need to go watch Go again lol.

I actually watched some of the original V series from the 80s on SyFy last weekend and I was really hooked on it! Pretty gritty and some good effects too!

Has anyone seen the scene where Robin gives birth to the two alien babies?! (scary or humorous?!) lol :silly:

I was a huge fan of the original V shows/miniseries/tv-movies.

So, not to ruin it for anyone that hasn't seen the most recent episode...

Having grown up watching V, V the mini series, and V the series I loved every bit of it.. Hot aliens in red suits. So with the advent of the new Series I of course was like WTH another of my childhood stories twisted into something else..and I have been correct but, I am pleased..They are paying homage to the olde series however they are making it a new story with today's morals and fears.. Am I 100% thrilled.. No.. And that has more to do with the fact that some of the primary actors are still not "into" there persona.. YOu can tell they are acting and not actually living it.. And a good show makes you believe they are indeed living it..

And now the actress who played Diana is back..It is either a ploy to bring in the olde crowd or a weak attempt to tie the original series to this one..

V is a little bit of a guilty pleasure to be sure

It's appallingly written - character motives come and go, huge gaping plot holes and oversights and some seriously wooden dialogue. Characters stumble through the plot like drones and coincidence heaps upon coincidence.

But it does have a few redeeming features - discounting the camp spice added by Jane Badler. I am sure that a lot of geeks of my generation got a shiver when she was revealed - and I think every gay geek was mandated to squeal, just a little bit :)

Like BSG before it - there's a metaphysical aspect in the quest to conquer the human soul. But that's probably where the comparisons to Ron Moore's opus stop.

Monica Baccarin's Anna can be (but rarely is) truly terrifying, her smiling, beauteous demeanour revealing nothing of her (virtual) moustache-twirling-histrionic-spouting-evil.

The sheer preposterous nature of the show is fast becoming its strength. How mental can they go this week - and still keep me watching till the closing credits.

Yet still I watch.

Sexy lizard queens with (very Freudian!) lethal hidden tails? Check.

Yet still I watch,

A master plan to breed with the humans (How very 1950's b-movie - "We're here for your women!"). check.

Yet still I watch.

A giant technobabble plot device (We need to park our giant invisible space ships on buildings) Check.

Yet still I watch.

Plot twists telegraphed so far in advance that they make an episode of Casualty look like Hitchcock.

You get the picture - yet still I watch.

Maybe I keep watching in the vain hope that someone, at some point, will slap the sh!t out of Tyler. For. Being. So. Damn. Stupid.

I know it's bad - but I am hooked. Just don't tell anyone.

Hahaha!

I have to say that I'm a big fan of the new series. I vaguely remember bits from the original series because my mum used to watch it, but at the time I think it scared me!

So far I've enjoyed the episodes that many people seemed to think were less good. For example, I thought 'Laid Bare' was very good. I loved how cruel the humans were to Malik, and how they became just as nasty as the V's for a brief period. I liked Malik's final scene.

I enjoy how much of it is subtle, although there is a limit to my patience in waiting for exciting things to happen. I guess storylines become limited once aliens invade though. Battlestar really went wild though, so they could actually do the full-on invasion and it might even work!

I hope they don't cancel this. I'm starting to get bored of picking up a new series because they've cancelled something because it wasn't making the company a quick buck.

Revisiting this post.. Ok.. I have to admit have the original Diana back in the show has been nice.. She is one sneaky lil lady.. and her play of mom v daughter v granddaughter is just so delicious... And yes it is a guilty pleasure.. Still campy as hell.. and still bad acting and bad plots but, it is getting better and better.. Let us hope it rises to the occasion before it is pulled like all the series that do not pull in quick bucks..
