Star Trek: Birth of the Federation

An oldie... but definitely a game I loved to play.

Almost Master of Orion'ish.... And lots of cool Star Trek elements to the game.

Anyone here a fan of Birth of the Federation (BotF)?

@SaintPlazma, yeah I agree... BotF was probably the best space turn based strategy game ever released after MOOII (Master of Orion 2).

Master of Orion 3 was a complete disaster. I actually threw my copy of it in the garbage I was so pissed off with how they ruined it.

Firstly MOO3 does not exist, I refuse to acknowledge that abomination.

Secondly, BotF was an awesome game, every now and then I get the itch to play it, but it doesn't run under windows XP or 7, so it makes me sad :( and I go play Galactic Civilizations instead. (there's probably a star trek mod for that out there somewhere, but I can't be arsed to find it).

Firstly, I have never played BotF.

Secondly, Master of Orion 2 is awesome :) I had that game installed on my pc for the longest time.

@Snownova, I agree with you... I waited patiently for them to release MOO3 for years... and when I finally got a copy... I couldn't believe what garbage it was.

BotF was so much fun... I used to play it online with friends all the time. I never got into Galactic Civilizations but I've heard great things about it.

@Halish, BotF is kinda like a Star Trek version of Master Of Orion 2. I still play MOO2 sometimes myself. It's a classic game and should they ever make a MOO4... Here's hoping they actually do it justice!

Oh geez the hours I spent on BotF could fill the Tardis. Loved Loved Loved that game, I was reading about it in gamer magazines for months before it came out. I was particularly good at playing as the Romulans and the Ferengi. I played Masters of Orion but I don't remember if it was 2 or 3 but it sucked so it must've been 3.

@SaintPlazma, I must admit... I was a Federation fanboy while playing BotF. LOL Although, I enjoyed playing all five major races you just had to tweak your play style depending on which of them you were playing at the time.

@Jasonmillard, The game you tried must have been MOO3 by Quicksilver I belive. Both BotF and MOO2 were by Microprose.

Here are the intro's for each of the 5 main powers in the game. Bring back any memories? hehehe

Anyone besides me notice the close similarity between the Ferengi and the Cardassians.

@Rickster: Lol that takes me back. At one point I had all 5 of them memorized. I hated playing as the Cardassians because their economy was always tanking.

This topic almost makes me want to play it again. It does work under windows 7 but unfortunately you have to run it through DosBox which really does bring down the graphics quality somewhat.

I still have BotF in my game library, but it's been so long since I've played, I have few memories of HOW it played. I do remember all of the openings thanks to Rickster's refresher.

I've been doing some digging, and apparently there are some patches out there that people have used to some success to get it running on XP, Vista and 7. Haven't tried it myself yet.

Maybe I should try installing it on my Win7 64 bit... If it doesn't pan out... I suppose I could always install it on the XP mode virtual machine.

I really miss this game too... I'm gonna have to try and get it to work with Windows 7 sometime just so I can play again.

I know it was the closest thing to a Master of Orion (MOO) sequel especially since MOO3 was so disappointing.

And the Star Trek theme was a nice tough of course... LOL :)

I really liked Botf and was very disappointed when a few years ago Bethesda released Star Trek Conquest and it was pitiful in comparison.

Having said that I enjoyed most of the old Star Trek Games from the 25th Anniversary, TNG Final Unity and VOY Elite Force
