Age of Empires goes F2P

Age of Empires goes F2P

July 03 2011
The first computer game I ever really played (there was this DOS ninja game that I played when I was really young that I could never get past the 5th level) was the first Age of Empires. I've played every once since, Age of Kings, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires III, and I've loved each and every one.

You wouldn't believe my shock when I found out today that they are making a MMO of Age of Empires and despite my distaste for F2P MMOs, I really do think I'll be giving this one a try.

You can check it out at http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/ and it launches August 16th. There will be teaming, cooping and possibly alliances in the game as well, so if anyone else out there wants to give the game a go, we can definitely team up, and who knows, maybe even create a guild in the game.

Don't feel bad, Nick. I think it looks interesting too, however, I don't remember AOE being that cartoonish. Makes me think it may be oriented to a younger audience?

Yeah, it is, but it still looks fun. I'll probably play it with my nephew too.

Played the beta for a few weeks. It was okay. A bit too mission based (some timed - yikes) for my taste though.

Might give it another shot. I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since I played last.

Well, AoE Online launched today and I've been playing it a bit. It's a pretty interesting game, a lot like the others.

You have a Capital City, somewhat like the Home City in Age of Empires III, where you upgrade your troops, units and buildings with gear of different rarity (Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare). Every building and unit you want to use needs to be unlocked in your Capital City before using them in the the 'quests' which makes leveling slow business.

Sadly, villagers require resource drop off points again. I loved the Atlantians in Age of Mythology for not needing resource huts and I took for granted not having them in AoE III. Priests can convert troops to their side again though!

Quests are how you level up your Capital City in the game, earning you Tech points, to unlock new building and units. You also earn Empire Points, a currency to buy unique items, all of which require a premium account to use. Each quest is a different mission where you have to complete certain objectives to finish it and earn the rewards, kinda different from previous AoE games. Some are timed, but I've had no trouble completing them.

It's a F2P game through and through. Noobs are every where. They already have an in-game store backed full of stuff that totals to over 125 dollars. Premiums users get extreme boosts in combat and everything else, sadly.

yeah I started playing it for a bit today and was completely ignoring the chat channel, I was debating whether to just get the season pass, but I want to play some more to see if I'm actually going to be playing this for awhile.

I think I played one of those at a friends house a long time ago. I liked it, RTS games where my first love. I might check it out. I think the one that I played had Atlanteans in it.

I loved the Age of Empires games, until they ruined it with the third one.

Be good to reminisce

I like AoE so I might check this out - though I'm still playing STO too much right now to take on another game :)

I didn't like the new gameplay at all.

Maybe I should give it another go. It has been many years and maybe I mis-remember
