SPOILER - SyFy's Wharehouse 13 goes Gay

July 19 2011
Uhmmmm....Spoilers below

The newest episode of Warehouse 13's new season, titled "Trials," had an interesting surprise.

Last weeks season opener introduced a new male lead addition to the cast named Steve Jinks, nicknamed "Jinx" who works for the ATF. After Jinx gets introduced to artifact hunting, he gets recruited to the Warehouse by another show original cast member, and the plot ensues. Aside from initial character development, and the mission/episode main plot, little is revealed about Jinx other then surface details. He is a Buddhist and he hates lies (watch the show for more).

But....low and behold this week's episode has a bit of newbie teasing by another long time cast member, Claudia. During a steak out, after some witty banter, Claudia thinks Jinx is hitting on her, and after teasing him some more and making Jinx uncomfortable with the implication that he is into her, Jinx reassures her that he was in no way attempting to come on to her, because he is in fact, gay.

The rest of the episode shows he and Claudia bonding while they complete their mission, and setting them up as a cool "ATF Gaygent" and his "Girl Wonder" partner.

So SyFy finally breaks the Sci-Fi 5th wall, and casts a Gay character, openly gay, openly gay and male, and openly gay and male and cute, and not an obvious gay stereotype.

Bravo SyFy, I have been a fan of the mancandy on their network since Dr Jackson in SG1, all the way thru to Captain Apollo and others in BSG, oh, and can I get arrested by Sheriff Carter? Please? But now, they are finally taking a chance with making a main re-occurring character openly and unabashedly gay. Now....I just wonder who is going to get cast as his first love interest?

Haven't had a chance to watch EP 2, yet, but...

WTH, first Bones, now Warehouse 13 has turned into a Prius commercial?

Ooooh the hatred that flows through my veins right now, you could bottle it.

Jinx (and his special power) was REALLY annoying at first, but I feel that was more the writing and direction than the actor. By the end of the episode he was pretty endearing. (Though I don't really feel I'll ever not find the whole special power not annoying. At least Lattimer's power isn't thrown up in your face with such frequency.)

Never got into Warehouse 13, but I had to look it up. Sadly the galleries at Siffy appear to be offline, so headed over to IMDB. I enjoyed Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, the kinda cute, kinda nerdy photographer. Never though of him much as "eye candy" (unlike his brother, Shawn, who was the hottest "cold" man in town). How's he pulling it off? I may have to take a look at the first couple of episodes this season.

Jack Harkness from Dr. Who/Torchwood would be my ideal portrayal of a gay character if it weren't for the fact he isn't technically "gay" on the show, just omnisexual ("You people and your labels."). It would be nice to see a non-stereotypical, strong, gay character. Just hope Aaron's up to the task.

ARRRG, You could have put a spoiler warning in the title of your thread. Why even the title of the thread is a spoiler grrr@you.

However since I didn't read the post and you reminded me to watch the new episode, I'll forgive you just this once. :silly:

Im just waiting for the day when a gay character can be added to a series, on a standard network, with no drama. They either have to be exceedingly fem or someone of the opposite sex needs to seduce them when they admit with much embarassment that they are gay.

Like Will and Grace?

Although there have been plenty of ambiguously gay characters throughout the latter half of the 20th century. They were always understood to be gay, but it was never mentioned.

Though I'm blanking on any examples, just now.

Personally, I long for the day when Asian characters can have as much leading actor time. I'm sure that a few have been done outside of being typecast as martial artists, mathematicians, or slitty eyed (and therefore untrustworthy) bad guys... I just can't think of any.

hmmm...I actually forgot that uncle Sam from Caprica was on SyFy first, and was openly gay.

I guess my brain is just trying very hard to push any memory of Caprica out of my head.

Isn't Torchwood made by BBC America? Not the SyFy channel?

I think Jinx is cute. Lattemer is a stud too, but multiple types of cute men on a show are always nice. Lean redheads are a definite + in my book.

Torchwood was originally BBC Wales, now it is Starz & BBC Wales.

Yeah. I didn't mean to confuse issues (Warehouse 13/Syfy with Torchwood). I just brought up Capt. Jack because I like the portrayal of his sexuality as though it isn't the main point of his character, but they don't gloss over it either. He is a representation of how I'd like to see other "out" characters to be seen: leading roles, non-stereotypical in their portrayal (a la Kurt Hummel in Glee), etc.

Jack isn't technically "out" because the character isn't technically "gay." He'll sleep with anything attractive enough, thus my use of the term "omnisexual" to describe him. The actor, John Barrowman, on the other hand, is an out gay man (and committed to his partner since 1993).

So epp 8 just aired the other day and Jink's got fired wtf :( i am so happy to see kate on the show but the fact that he is gone makes me sad. But thinking about this now i really think syfy is a really progressive network i mean with gay main characters on several shows like torchwood, bsg and stargate universe and now warehouse 13.

Jinx is dead and Mrs. Frederic is a mummy.

But, Arty has the watch....

Dammit, if Jinx doesn't somehow come back, I'll be so mad.

Wait... Who is the Warehouse um... Watcher? Matron? I really can't see anyone else doing that job, not Arty not.... Ok maybe Mulgrew, but she's got other responsibilities.

But there was supposed to be some sort of ceremony between the two to do so. Claudia was chosen at that time, but now it's up in the air; anyone could take it.

Dr Who has actually been remarkedly progressive in its depictions of sexuality. Keep in mind that it is a show that airs around 18:45 on the BBC's main channel. BBC1 in the UK.

There was the taught episode where the Doctor(Tennant) is stuck in a tour bus thing on a crystalized planet and is nearly killed when something weird happens. A woman who is seemingly possessed in it talks about her wife before things hit the fan.

Jack is the obvious angle, even if he played it up far more in Torchwood which was aired later on (After the Watershed, 9pm limit for more risque content). And then you had Russell Tovey(sic) the guy who survives the Titanic Christmas Special. Who is then seen at the end of one of Tennants seasons being set up with Jack by the Doctor.

None of these were really made big deals of during them, but were nice little nods that Who/BBC via Russell T Davies felt able to show these things at such a time without too much trouble.
