"I was given something wonderful that changed me forever, a vision of the universe that tells us undeniably how tiny and insignificant and how rare and precious we all are. A vision that tells us that we belong to something greater than ourselves and that we are not, that none of us are alone." - Eleanor Arroway, Contact

Awesome vid! Always love watching that kind of stuff. "We are the only living things in the universe", lol yeah right.

Interesting how there are regions that were not even mapped yet. Wonder when we will be able too

For people whose parents never said to them, "The world doesn't revolve around you." or "Despite what you may think, you are not the centre of the universe."

I've seen that and things like it, before, as well as my favourite:

in_The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy#Total_Perspective_Vortex]Total Perspective Vortex" in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. :p

That or they'd just be as useless at life as I am. :p

Hee, I hadn't thought of "Look Around You" in a long time, it used to come on BBC America. I wish I could find audio clips of "Ask Dr Science", a radio short that plays on some American public-radio stations. "I have a master's degree--in science!"

Here is one of my absolute favorites. A video trying to help you imagine the 10 dimensions of reality.

Was that you instantaneously "jumping" from one place to another by crossing over the next higher dimension?

I'm thinking that the analogy wouldn't hold for a real physicist, because, if I remember right, the current model holds there are 13 dimensions. I may be wrong, but I'm almost certain that's what I've read the past few times I've read up on the subject.

That's the fun thing about science, accepted ideas change as new evidence and trains of thought get discussed... There was a very interesting article that I read just yesterday that Physics now has to consider evidence that neutrinos can travel faster than the speed of light. If we all remember, according to Einstein nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. The whole experiment is going up for peer review, and if they find no flaws in the science, that is a major kick in the pants to our accepted ideals of what is and isn't possible anymore.

IF this evidence gains traction and can be re-created, that means that Time-Travel and Faster than Light Space Travel all become possible now. Time will tell though.

I was reading about an experiment, I don't remember if it was the neutrinos or another one, that could upend our very concept of cause and effect--the present could change the past.

I did like this video, though, I thought it did a very good job of explaining a very difficult concept. I'm just not sure if it's up to date is all.

It is certainly a few years old. When I first found it, it was strictly a Flash animation on the website broken down into 4 or 5 parts. Better quality than the YouTube video, but not nearly as convenient for sharing.

Nowhere near as old as the Powers of 10 video though. :)
