Fave novels? I'd love some recommendations!

March 18 2012
For a word about my tastes:

My favorite fantasy series is probably the Game of Thrones series (fan long before the rather good tv series).

Favorite sci-fi.. probably Dune.

Possibly the only good queer fantasy or sci-fi novel I have read:
Dreamer: A Novel Of the Silent Empire, by Stephen Harper (not the Canadian Prime Minister) which I heartily recommend, though the two sequels that I read disappointed me. By the way, it's available for $0.99 on kindle!

I also like "literature" - the first example that comes to my head is the Life of Pi.. an awesome book by (Canadian) author Yan Martel.

Thanks in advance for your input!

All of my GLBTQ reading that I enjoy is on the nifty archives website... There are some good stories out there if you can wade through all of the crappy purely sexual stories...

I'm a hopeless romantic who is more interested in the characters and their story than anything else, and not opposed to love scenes so long as they are tastefully written.

I will go on to say also that my favorite Fanatsy series of all time (well right now) is The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. I own the entire series of books and will occasionally read them again. I have some of the Wheel of Time audiobooks, that's a good series it was just getting too pricey to keep up with since I don't have tons of time to listen to them anymore.

Yeah, and I just read Attitude for the articles... :P

I'm not a big reader, in fact I've still not managed to finish a real "book" in my adult life, which is a bit shameful. But you should all be reading Khaos Komix because it's GBLT goodness :)

thanks for the responses. I guess there isn't much out there.

What about regular sci-fi fantasy? What's your favorite? I need some junk reading. :)

Well, since you like "literature," my personal all-time favorite is The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy (also loved Tess of the D'Urbervilles and most of his other works). It's set in pastoral 1880s-90s-ish England. In the first two chapters the guy sells his wife and daughter at a county fair. He later builds a respectable life, then things unfold from there. This is the only book that I have ever had physical and verbal reactions to; for example, "OH NO HE DI-IDN'T!" and "OH SNAP!" as well as "NO EFFIN' WAY!" and the ever classic "hmmmm...."

I have fewer titles rattling around in my head than authors, as I tend to remember who writes my favourite books more than I remember individual books.

Terry Pratchett
Robert Asprin
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Larry Niven
Alan Dean Foster
Jack Williamson
E.E. "Doc" Smith (Purportedly one of lucas' "inspirations" for Star Wars was Smith's Lensman)

=edit=

Although I haven't read a lot of Smith's work, so I don't know if what I had read was a fluke and the rest of his works are shite. :p

Best half sci/fi half fantasy series I've read has got to be the Exiles Trilogy... well 2/3 trilogy. Melanie Rawn has been draggin her heels for over a decade.

Either way, human beings with semi-magical abilities. Matriarchal society based loosely on Catholic traditions. It's intense and awesome and is about the size of war and peace.

If you're in the mood for a break from fantasy - best nutball series is by Tim Dorsey and starts with Florida Roadkill. It's the ultimate in tourist directives.

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. There are several suggestions you all made that I plan on pursuing as well. And also you inspired some fun memories, like the mention of Robert Asprin. I was a huge fan of the Myth series back in the day. That thought lead to the fun I had with the Thieves World and Wild Cards collaborative novels. Ah, nostalgia. I wonder if there are series like that anymore.

I just bought: '1Q84' by Haruki Murakami. I'm excited because I've really enjoyed some of his other books.

The reviews for book 4 and 5 of the Game of Thrones Series are pretty meh, so I am avoiding that for now even though I absolutely loved the first 3.

I could also go for a neuromancer-ish novel at the moment. Maybe I'll check in on his more recent books.

Oh, and I downloaded the two Thomas Hardy books since they are free! Great review Qiqjoe!

I still would enjoy a well written queer sci-fi or fantasy novel if there was one to be found.

I personally LOVE the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik.

Its takes place during the Napoleonic wars. Everything is the same as history tells us except there is a pretty significant twist. Dragons exist, they talk, and they serve as the waring nation's "air force". There are 6 books so far, and I think there are going to be several more.

I highly recommend them, especially if you are an animal person.

My favorite author and I say this loosely is anything by Heinlein though his 50's/60's stuff is a bit superficial today with our technology but hey... so was the orginal star trek ... heinlein's later works like "Friday" I adore, written when he was like 80 or so; and was one of my coming out books I think ... and then anything with lazarrus long (the books are endless, ... "time enough for love", "the cat who walks through walls" so many to name) .. starship troopers the movie was nothing like the book, nor was puppet masters but some of his works. While I love "Friday" .. "I Will Fear No Evil" may be my favorite book by him also written much later in his life which will have gay and lesbian themes in it and done well I think for a writer of his generation . my copy is dog-eared and missing pages .. I need to get a kindle version of it if available lol.

For lesbian literature Chris Anne Wolfe rocks though she died very young but has a few books out there. Have not read her "Death Sweet Suitor Mine" she wrote as she died its too final for me but anythig else I give a thumbs up to .. Annabelle and I, Bitter Thorns (beauty and the beast retold) - huge thumbs up on that one, then the aggar books think 2 of each.

Jane Fletcher for also lesbian literature rocks in her warriors at think its westernfront series up to 4 books now. She has a more magical series as well like someting and the chalice think 3-4 books, but the warriors one I liked better lol!

I just got done reading "When women were warriors" books 1-3 on kindle) and it was a good read so another to think about though female in sexual content.

Anyway some more ideas for folks depending on what they want but don't discount a lesbian read if you are a guy or vice versa ... Robin Hobb has alot of innuedo in some of the prolly 12, 500+ page books she has done without being explicit especially "the fool's" character in the first series she wrote. its not really gay lit, but ... I felt some things when reading her stuff, and didnt want to put the book down I thnk I am 3 of her novels behind.

Oh and lets not forget "Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins which is a movie now .. there are 3 books and while not 'gay' in nature ... I love that it has a female protagoist through all 3 books. Not sure how this first person writiting will come across on big screne but i do plan to go see the first movie since I have now read all 3 books.

(edit "I will fear no evil" is on kindle and I just bought it so no more dog eared missing paged copy woohoo, off to read it again for the umpteenth time!)

I love A Burnt-Out Case by Graham Greene its not long but its the best book I read in high school.

From Amazon:
Querry, a world-famous architect, is the victim of an attack of indifference, no longer finding meaning in art or pleasure in life. Arriving anonymously at a Congo leper village, he loses himself in work for the lepers. As he helps the lepers, so he approaches a self-cure.

I love Terry Pratchett books, his humour and talent for showing us our world twisted hilariously into his fantasy Discworld always makes me laugh out every time I read the books. Plus there are loads of them so you won't get bored quickly.

If you want something a bit more serious and Sci-Fi, my favourite book in that genre is "Intervention" by Julian May. It's about the emergence of psychics over the world during the last 60 years and how they changed the world, good and bad. All while being watched by aliens races hoping that humans would grow up enough for them to make contact. The book is part of a series that takes part in the far future, but this one is the best to start with.

One lesser-known science fiction author I love is Connie Willis. She has marvelous collections of short stories, fun romantic romps like Bellwether, and not-so-fun but excellent heavy (in both senses of the word) works like The Doomsday Book. Oh, and Lincoln's Dreams.

As a penny-pincher with a Kindle, I've been discovering some of the classics you can get for free or very cheap (and they don't take up any physical space on your book shelves!). Right now I'm in the middle of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, from his complete works. I read Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, and some other classics. I even tried some of the Oz books (L Frank Baum, not the HBO show with the naked Chris Meloni), but many of them are not very good.

And I'll throw another vote in for Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. (Try Good Omens if you want them both at the same time!)

I do love a good read myself. My shelves really do bow under the amount of books I have. I also have the Kindle apps on my PC, phone and ipad.

Authors I especially like include:

Peter F Hamilton. Scottish author and famous for his HUGE space opera. Nights Dawn Trilogy being the classic point. Still great books though.

Iain M Banks. Another Scot who is well regarded for rekindling Sci-Fi around the UK etc. His Culture series is his most well known. He often writes very dark stories. But also has a good dose of humour espeically when it comes to the spaceships, their super AI Minds and attitudes.

Alistair Reynolds. Another fairly recent addition. Likes his Hard Sci Fi. And his music, as most of his books are titled from songs. Revelation Space. Century Rain and so forth.

Most of these will not feature any overt sexuality and so wont cover GLBT books really. Most of those will see you looking to small press stuff which is where the Kindle can come in very handy.

Anne McCaffery RIP. Sadly passed away now. McCaffery did feature some subtle but prevalent nods to Homosexuality etc in her Pern novels. These are more of a Sci Fantasy kind. The earliest books read like regular Fantasy with people flying on dragons and so on. However it is later revealed that they are actually a Lost Colony. Began as a colony effort from Earth but find their existence nearly wiped out. A rogue planetoid dubbed the Red Star passes the planet every few centuries and when it does spores are drawn from the planetoid to Pern where they consume anything Organic. The only solution the ccolonists find is some small reptiles that seem able to chew certain rocks to trigger flames that can score the spores before they land. They genetically modify these lizards into something big enough for a human to ride on and mentally meld with, bonding the 2 from the "Dragons" birth.
The dragons in question are intelligent and mentally equal to their human bond mates. They also vary in size and colouration. Colours also denote their gender with Gold and Green being the only female dragons. Green are the smallest and Gold the biggest. The dragons themselves do mate and when they are in their Heat their riders will be driven by that urge to mate as well with the others rider. Women riders are typically only Golden riders so the Greens are typically paired with men. Men who will be inclined to the riders of the Male dragons above them as well.
I can only recall one book which gave one of these pairings a definite face. Dragonsblood. Where a dragonrider in the early part clearly talks about a male partner and mate of his and his dragon. Alas it is a sad romance as said lover had died. But it is an overt acknowledgement of Homosexuality in her Pern Universe and that they can attain any goal including bonding with and riding the dragons.
TL:DR: Pern dragons have small females who mate with the smaller males and when they mate, so do their riders. Which in terms of the smaller dragons are almost all male. And to quote the book. Green dragons will bond with riders who are not adverse to mating with the larger dragons rider. I may have got that quote badly wrong, but that is the essence of it.

Back to regular fantasy without all the above added...

Robin Hobb. Writes some very moving and intelligent fantasy books. Very much worth a read. And her covers are done by John Howe. Otherwise known as the artist for Lord Of The Rings etc. He helped shape the look of those films.

David Gemmell RIP. Gemmell is a writer of the so called Heroic Fantasy. Think vaguely along the lines of Conan etc. However he also was a very smart writer who widely acknowledged there being no such thing as pure good or evil. Everyone has reasoning behind their actions, even if their actions lead to evil acts happening. And his Heroes are always deeply flawed people for whom doing good typically is forced upon them.
His Drenai novels are very good and what led me into reading him when I read an analogue to Samurai etc were in it. From there I was hooked.

Arthur C Clarke RIP. If you don't know this name then you must be fairly new to Sci Fi or not have seen or read much yet. He is one of the great Grand Masters of the 50s onward. Typically a Hard Sci Fi author. His books although somewhat dated at times, can be extremely impressive and moving.
He often writes books that see humnaity far ahead in the future or having to come to terms with very advanced cultures.
Rama sequence being a classic case. A small group of scientists are sent to this odd alien ship that arrives near Earth. They become trapped on it as it accelerates away from Earth and have to find a way to live and learn about this new home of theirs. There are perils and discoveries aboard and they encounter a lot of the course of the 3 novels.
A Space Oddysey. aka 2001. Yes the books and film are dated now, much like early Trek. But so much of 2001 and its 3 sequels is great.
TL:DR synopsis. Humans find a big black Monolith that sends a signal to Jupiter. Humans follow and something all together more wide ranging triggers. 2001, 2010, 2061 and finally 3001 are the books of this, covering leaps in time and developments as the names ssuggest.

Now if you really want GLBT stories and are relatively open minded you might consider some of the so called Furry Fandom/Anthropomorphic stories. Yes we are talking stuff like the Caitians here. And as mentioned above with Nifty, a lot of it is highly sexualised Erotica. But if you are open minded about your Sci Fi and it does not need to be Human romance then you have an outlet there. Because they are very much a niche deal they do not feel such an urge to mute any sexual suggestions or aspects that might see a bigger publisher turn away from them.
Kyell Gold would be worth a look at for someone from that fandom who I gather has spread beyond into even having his books added to some American School libaries...

Lots of great authors mentioned in this thread! I'd like to add a few whose books I've lost myself in.

Mercedes Lackey - Her stuff is pretty tame as far as sci-fi/fantasy is concerned. She features quite a few GLBT characters in her work, especially in the Valdemar series. I also enjoyed the Obsidian Trilogy, which she co-wrote with James Mallory.

George R. R. Martin - Goes almost without saying. I'm currently reading A Feast For Crows.

Michael Crichton's Timeline rocked my world.

I've read a lot of R. A. Salvatore's work as well.

My favorite work of all time, however, is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
