dys4ia: a game about transgender transitioning

April 20 2012
dys4ia is an autobiographical game about period in a transgendered person's life life when she started hormone replacement therapy. It's a story about her, and is certainly not meant to represent the experience of every trans person.

It's a pretty interesting game and helped me view what it's like for transgendered people a little better. It doesn't take long to play so click the link below and then reply with your thoughts on the matter.

Gave me a nice insight on something I never really understood.

I would not recommend getting drugs off the the internet to anybody at all.

All in all though it was pretty good, and as for the last part about breasts getting bigger - oh if only :(

Online Pharmacy's are alot cheaper, I work for largest pharmacy chain in the United States, I have one atop of the line drug plan even then my migraine medication would run $175($300 without $200 at walmart), or $48 online. I understand being anti online pharmacy where healthcare is a right, but in the US we have little choice.

Could feel a tear coming on. It's hard to imagine the struggle transgendered people must go through just for the simple things like being called the correct pronoun.

Thanks for sharing the game. Pretty interesting and moving.

Maybe it is just me though but they did gloss over the worst parts of it;

Anxiety
depression
the constant roars of laughter after you leave the room
self mutilation
suicide attempts
rejection by family in many cases

Very interesting game. I think it describes things very well. I only know the basics from my medical experience but I think it should make people understand what a trans person actually goes through in this portion of their lives. Hopefully, others will actually try the game rather than immediately dismiss it after finding out what it's about. :)

It's not bad, but I'm with LesleyA--there are some fairly common elements of the experience of being a trans woman that were left out. For example, the game designer clearly was still talking to her family. Some of us are not so fortunate! I'm lucky that my mom does still talk to me and even considers me her daughter. My father? Not so much luck there. :(

Also, estradiol by itself generally doesn't cause breast development--that's more a function of progesterone. Estradiol does cause hair to become lighter and fainter--and this happens even with facial hair, although said hair tends to be quite coarse and dark to begin with, so one either must shave or, more usefully, undergo some sort of hair removal regimen. (I went with laser and it worked well enough that, while I still shave, what I shave isn't darkly pigmented--no more shadow! YAY!)

Ironically, in the US, the main anti-testosterone drug is also prescribed as medication for high blood pressure.

One more thing: Customs tends to seize hormones ordered outside the United States. The formulations are the same--and often the hormones are made in the same factory, just packaged and sold in different markets. But it's still dangerous because if you aren't careful you can overdose and wind up with renal failure--a fate at least one trans woman of my acquaintance has experienced.

Thanks for your clarification Lilith, I suspected it glossed over some important details in an effort to make it more "acceptable" to the mainstream and keep the video a workable length. I sincerely hope it will help in making people more accepting and supportive because I know how difficult life becomes for those with the courage to be who they truly are. I am sorry for the difficulties you are having with your father though, I know that is difficult for you. :(

Thanks, but I don't think it's easy on ANY of us. We're not living in the early 25th Century, alas--we've a ways to go before humanity is ready to accept us without question. I'm sure I'm not the only one on this forum who wishes a parent of ours would accept who we are.

Besides, the rest of my family is accepting, and I have lots of friends and lovers to provide the support I need. I'm one of the lucky ones.

*Subject hop* Ohh for something akin to Iain M Banks Culture. Where you can shift between male and female by consulting the Lace in your brain and telling it that you wish to be X or Y now. Then it transitions you over a few weeks. Tot he extent that many in it are Mothers and Fathers several times. Seeing what it is like to experience both sides.

Back on topic. Maybe if people who are Trans support and talk to the creator of this title, then others might get developed. Look at the aspects that were not covered here for one reason or another.

And although I am happy as I am, I would fully support any friend or lover who wanted to undergo such a transition in their real life.

Well, in all fairness, I only ever experienced one side--mine. :) I may have been granted provisional male privilege at times but not consistently, and it's been well over a decade since I even had the option. I was feminine well before I realized I was trans. Would I change bodies if I could choose what kind of body it was? Probably--but I wouldn't presume the body itself was gendered. I have a gender, not it.

It's not really a game, is it? I mean, it's more like a presentation which requires the completion of uninteresting tasks to move on to the next slide. It had a lot of the same feel as a primitive 1970's science museum display in which there's a bit of text describing a concept, and then there's a card that reads "PRESS TO SEE ELECTRONS FLOW" and when you press it, a series of red LEDs embedded in the wall blink from one side to the other. One time.

I get what the author was going for, but this may not be the best medium for the message.

I can see that, but it seemed engaging to me all the same.
