So im wanting to switch occupations from nursing to IT and i was wondering what your opinions are on getting a job with Geek Squad. Is there other alternatives? Im wanting to get certified and then get a degree for computer information since getting a certificate is a preferred requirement to being in Geek Squad.

There's been a big shakeup in Best Buy lately (of which I've read a lot since it's headquartered where I live.) They've seen losses the past few quarters, just had a chaotic change of CEO, and they're planning to shift to smaller stores. I'm not sure how much this business model will affect Geek Squad. Since that's where I got my lappy, I'm hoping nothing too crazy happens.

I forgot about all the news that it made, but I do remember reading about it. Hopefully it does not impact my future employment with them and the company adapts to the consumers.

I'm not sure how much work they actually do in house because every time I've had to take my computers there under their extended warranty, they've shipped it to their repair center in Kentucky. They couldn't even repair it when the plastic bracket that held the fan over the cpu broke, it was sent to Kentucky. I know they install home theaters and such but I don't think that is IT oriented.

My background is in the medical field so I would recommend staying in nursing because you will always have a job as a nurse. CNA's aren't as much in demand as RN's are though so I guess it depends what field of nursing you're currently in.

Computers are certainly much more pleasant to work with than most patients tend to be so I can see why you'd like to switch careers there but just be careful you don't get yourself into too niche a market or position because that could really put a damper on possibilities for the future.

Hospitals have large IT departments. When you say you want to be in IT, I would assume you mean Information Technology (aka programming) as opposed to Geek Squad which is more of a PC Repair/Troubleshooting route?

@itvertlet: it doesnt have anything to do with the patients, i understand their situation so Im patient with them as humanly possible. But I fear I may be starting to burn out.

@sthiss: Yes, I do mean Information Technology. I was just thinking that Geek Squad may give me some experience to put down on a resume.

I spoke with my company's IT guy to see if there was any stigma attached to being geek squad and he said the only complaint he's heard from people who work as part of geek squad is dealing with the public. Otherwise the company does treat them well.
I've also read that Best Buy is going to be closing a lot of stores and setting up those little kiosks instead in shopping centers so now may not be the best time to go to that company but if you have an IT certification you can pretty much take that anywhere and make good money.
