Regarding solely this individual and his pasta, the words of Gogo Yubari spring to mind: "Italian Trash!"

This kind of stuff doesn't usually bother me, but I actually buy Barilla pasta! I think I'll be switching to another brand, regardless of their apology.

I saw this story linked from several friends on FB today. I'm a little sad because I like their pasta sauce, but I'm not going to support their company if they're making statements like this.

Guess I'll be shopping for a new pasta brand this weekend!

Had my hubby dispose of all the Barilla products in the house. The fact that he doesn't want gays in his commercials is one thing but this guy is just so 1950's. Between the commercials and his idea of women in the kitchen...he can go $%&^ himself.

You would think he'd realize it would be of benefit to his company to just keep his damn mouth shut and sell his product. Instead, he's getting bad press for being an uninformed chode and trying to walk back his statement.

To be fair, both the he and the US Division of Barilla released an apology:

Barillo Chairman Guido Barilla said:
With reference to my statements yesterday to the press, I apologize if my words have offended some people.

For clarity I would like to point out that I have the deepest respect for all people, without distinction of any kind.

I have the utmost respect for homosexuals and freedom of expression. I also said, and repeat, that I have respect for marriages between people of the same sex.

Barilla in its advertising has always chosen to represent the family because this is the symbol of hospitality and love for everyone.

US Division of Barilla said:
At Barilla, we consider it our mission to treat our consumers and partners as our neighbors – with love and respect – and to deliver the very best products possible. We take this responsibility seriously and consider it a core part of who we are as a family-owned company. While we can’t undo recent remarks, we can apologize. To all of our friends, family, employees, and partners that we have hurt or offended, we are deeply sorry.

Of course they apologized. This is just damage control. He should have had the foresight to choose his statements carefully. I would have rather heard something like: We will consider that for the future.

I'd rather him avoid the issue all-together than to have them apologize for their lack of thinking. I have sworn off that companies products. Actions speak louder than words.

Yeah what i read is im a bigot and not really sorry but i realise that these things are unacceptable so am pretending to try and not have people leave my brand.

The company one is likely more legit however as lets face it all they care about is marketing to as many people as possible.

My Italian is vary rusty, but my guess is our friends at the Guardian are using something like google translate which doesn't always get the true meaning. We could have a Mokusatsu thing going on here

After Barilla's CEO made his not so nice comments, their main competitor, Bertoli, released the following image on social media sites:

with the captions: "Pasta und Liebe für alle!" (Pasta and love for all).

And the following statement:
We just wanted to spread the news that Bertolli welcomes everyone, especially those with an empty stomach.

The actually had a commercial with a gay couple:
