Right wing & conservative ST fans?

There is this thing bothering me. I am a member of a ST fan group in my country, which is Poland (where the LGBTs don't have it nice at all).
Some of my fellow ST fans are extremely (for my standards) conservative. It goes not only with women's rights (which drives me, a feminist, pretty crazy) but also with the elementary respect for LGBT people.
I truly don't understand how one can be both disrespectful towards gays and love the series that teaches respect, tolerance and stuff like that. One of the members is really making me mad with her constant homophobic and islamophobic comments she shares whenever she can. When I pointed out that it's not what ST teaches us, she just posted something like "Well, apparently I'm no true Trekkie, I was excommunicated". Oh gosh. One time I was at a con in my city and on one occasion she said something like "Shatner is doing good stuff for animals and deserves much more applause than Takei taking care f those fags". I was aghast not only by this comment but also the fact that two or more guys started clapping in agreement. Dafuq? On a ST convention??
I don't know, I seriously can't cope with it anymore and just wanted to share this. I thought the ST community is a place where I will not have to endure homophobic comments :/ Maybe you have similar experiences?

Conservative bigots are like STD's, they always pop up where you least expect them. :(

I encountered similar in the fleet of one of my alts. Logged in to see someone ranting about how "those types" made them sick to their stomach etc.

After a brief teasing out of what I had missed it turned out to be a 21 year old who was ranting about a couple of gay fleet members talking. Not anything graphic as far as I could tell, just the fact that they were gay was enough for this ST fan and STO player to rant off in Fleet Channel about it.

A Fleet Captain let them rant for a short time and then took them to task for their attitude and the fleets CoC regarding such talk. This of course resulted in the member claiming that maybe they are in the wrong game and trying to report the Captain for "harassment and religious intolerance". Sigh.

I try to point people towards IDIC etc if I encounter anyone trying to bring hatred into Trek/STO in general.

Ultimately some areas will be dragged kicking and screaming towards a more accepting mentality, but you will encounter those who want be to Terra Nova rather than the UFP.

And in your case specifically, I hope you are distancing yourself from this clearly homophobic person you went to the Con with. For your own good and mental wellbeing. :)

Sorry to hear she has been so hostile. I know a few people like that, and it can really be aggravating to hear them say such things, especially within a Star Trek community. Sam is right about IDIC. Star Trek is suppose to be about acceptance. Not hate. If they're continuously being aggressive, I'd try my best to try and distance myself from such unfriendly environment.

*huge hug squeezes* :)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I've been noticing a lot of homophobic, and near xenophobic comments in a lot of the social zones(ESD, DS9, and now Risa) it's shameful and why I avoid most of those places

The only cons I really go to are the annual Las Vegas ones put on by Creation Entertainment. Neither I, nor anyone I know who's gone has experienced any homophobic treatment. In face, couple years back, we were drinking at the casino bar with Rod Roddenberry, he was completely at ease being around a bunch of gay men and when I asked him if he thought his Father would've had any problem with the next Star Trek Captain being gay, he very readily said he did not think he would.

So these people who claim to be huge fans of Star Trek while simultaneously taking a crap on all that it stands for, are really no more than bigots who happen to like science fiction. It's not impossible, like a paraplegic gymnast, it's just really difficult. ;)

Wow, thanks for all the answers, this is supportive :)
Fortnuately I have not encountered any hate speech in game - probably because I just mostly click the Stonewall talk tab and don't look elswhere ;)
It's hard to ignore those comments when they come from a person I know. And I am very impulsive, you know, the Leonard McCoy type :D I feel the urge to react but maybe as long as it is not offensive but just stupid I shall probably ignore it.
Thanks :)

Unfortunatly hate and intolerance exists everywhere.

Although the STO saga has a lot to do with tolerance and acceptance regarding different persons, IMO it has to do more with the greatness of the human spirit.

This particularly discusses me as this opinions and most of all feelings, only show how far are we to be trully great.

Very sorry to hear about the experience.

Just try to ignore them.
