So. I have a late 2012 21.5 inch iMac (with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 M), I know it's a pretty poor graphics card, but it should be able to more than it currently is. :S

I've tried tinkering with the sliders, but can't seem to balance performance with looks. As I have no idea what half of these things mean !

Please could you screenshot your graphics settings from ingame, If you have a machine that's comparable. Awesome Sauce!

PS.
If you have any recommendations for a gaming headset. That would be awesome!

My current pc is 7 or 8 years old, probably the oldest in the whole fleet, lol. Not really happy with my settings either, but I'm just holding till I have my new pc.

Headset: I use the Fatal1ty Gaming Headset. It looks nice and works pretty well. It is wired though. Also, take a look at this thread I started when I wanted to get a headset, some great suggestions in there: http://fleet.stonewallgaming.net/forums/ten-forward/62062-headset

I'm on a 2009 PC on a second and now currently failing graphics card, with research underway thanks to rixter, as such I have to run STO on all min and Low and nothing options..which makes my graphical experience..crapulent :S

On a plus (or minus) I don't see any balloons or stuff coming out of poppers!

Are you running the Mac client or Win client through Boot Camp? What resolution are you running at in game?

I'm running on the Mac Client (not with steam, but the other client).

If you have any recommendations to increase the prettiness, without killing the performance, I'd appreciate it!

I'm normally quite tech savvy. But clueless when it comes to graphics

Things I would try tinkering with:
Resolution: That is on the high-side, start by dropping down. Less rendered pixels to push will help.
Bloom: Try turning it off. For some reason Bloom can be a problem in general on Mac game clients.
Anisotropic Filtering: Drop it down
Reflections: depending on how they render them, you could try dropping that down. I'm guessing they don't use a simple reflection map, so that might help.
Max Lights per Object: Try dropping it to 4.

I would say the biggest things to change would be res, filtering and bloom and go from there.

Another option is the Boot Camp option. I normally wind up using Boot Camp for games, even when there is a Mac version via Steam. A lot of ports from DirectX are not well optimized for OpenGL. STO is definitely one I Boot Camp on my desktop, though I do run it MacOS on my laptop. Do not run STO in Parallels, I've gotten some games to perform adequately in it, but STO is not one of them.

Thankyou! just those few little changes and its running so much better now!

Also, my game doesn't crash anymore when I try to exit! I was actually able to up the rendering quality a little too. xD

For the headset I use Turtlebeach XP510's. I they work beautifully with the wired setup and wireless bluetooth mode is pretty clear as well. I love the sounds and multiple setting options for game/chat/music and ability to turn BT on/off and have mute options on the headset itself. Getting the BT to work right with the computer took a little tweaking, but I figured out the problem and now I never have an issue anymore.
